Gorton's Seafood review and giveaway

>
Giveaway closed.
Congratulations Pixie, LindsayC, NoFearon, LauraC and dddiva!

I love meals that are easy to prepare and taste good!  I recently was given the opportunity to try out some products from Gorton's Seafood.  These products were just that.  They were easy to make and tasted great.  I love that they offer a huge selection of different seafood products...and love that they offer so many that are grilled with no breading on them.  This is an easy way to keep the calories down and appease my picky husband(who doesnt like breaded items).

My husband tried a couple of their new grilled shrimp items.  He liked the flavor, but thought the shrimp were small.  Again it was good though as they were not breaded.  They were simple to cook and was so convenient.

For myself I tried the classic and the potato crunch fillets.  I love that I can just stick them in the oven and we have a simple dinner.  They taste great, even the kids liked them.  I was babysitting and the fish fillets were eaten quicker than the french fries!  You can even go online and find information and recipes for the kids by going to http://www.gortons.com/smartkids

You can go online for recipes, product information and where to buy Gorton's Seafood at http://www.gortons.com/

Fitness Friday- Truvia review and giveaway

>

Giveaway closed.
Congratulations Cheryl F.!

Truvia™ (pronounced Tru-VEE-a) natural sweetener is a great-tasting, natural, zero-calorie sweetener made with rebiana, the best-tasting part of the stevia leaf.  It provides consumers with a new, natural sweetener choice to reduce the number of calories in their diets. Truvia™ natural sweetener sprinkles just like sugar, and is great in coffee and tea, or on your morning grapefruit or cereal.  One packet of Truvia™ natural sweetener provides the same sweetness as two teaspoons of sugar.  Truvia™ natural sweetener is safe for people with diabetes, because it has no effect on the glycemic index (it does not raise or lower your blood sugar). You can also cook and bake with it – recipes and a sweetness conversion chart are available at http://www.truvia.com/.

I have had the opportunity to try Truvia™ and really like it.  I have not baked with it yet(I'm not a huge baker) but am hoping to try it soon.  I have used it in things like cereal, oatmeal and drinks.  I love making lemonaid with it!  I love that by making homemade lemonaid vs. store bought lemonaid I have saved myself 100 calories or more for each serving!  When I have used it with oatmeal and have taken a quick drink I can still taste it a tiny bit, but that goes away shortly after you are finished eating.  It does not have the same flavoring completely as sugar but it is still good.  I like that I know I am cutting calories yet it is still natural.

Look for the leaf symbol to indicate that the product has been naturally sweetened with Truvia™ rebiana.

Current products include:
• Glaceau vitaminwater10™ and vitaminwater zero™
• Coca Cola Sprite® Green™
• Odwalla® Reduced-Calorie Quencher
• Kraft Crystal Light Pure Fitness
• True® Lemon Naturally Sweet
• Kraft Nature’s Splash®
• All Sport Naturally Zero™
• Hansen’s® Natural Lo-Cal Juices
• Blue Sky® Free sodas
• Minute Maid Premium® Pomegranate Tea
• Breyers YoCrunch® 100 Calorie Pack
• Velamints breath mints
• Dippin’ Dots© ice cream

I absolutely love some of these products.  I love VitaminWater Zero and Dippin' Dots ice cream...and didnt even realize they have Truvia in them.  I also love Breyers YoCrunch 100 calorie packs and Crystal Light Pure Fitness.  These two items I like even better than the originals!
Truvia™ natural sweetener is available all over the country in grocery and food stores. You can find it in supermarkets like Kroger, Publix, SuperValu, Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Giant and Martin’s. You can also buy it at Whole Foods, Wal-Mart, and Target. It is available in boxes of 40-count ($3.99), 80-count ($6.49) and 140-count ($10.99) packets at the respective suggested retail price. Truiva™ spoonable is the equivalent in servings of an 80-count box of Truvia™ natural sweetener and now available nationally at grocery retailers with the suggested retail price of $6.99.
One lucky reader can win a box here!  To enter to win: Follow my blog and leave a comment telling me how you would use Truvia the most.

Swoosh swoosh swoosh

Gotta love that sound!   I got to hear the baby's heartbeat today....It was good and strong in the 150s.  I was measuring right on also...so looks like things are going good!  My next appointment is in one month, and then have the ultrasound scheduled for August.

OB appointment today

>
So I am checking out my blog this AM and see my baby ticker says I am at day 83: You can now hear your baby's heartbeat with listening device.  I am going to take that as a good sign, as today I go for my second OB appointment and we will listen for the baby's heartbeat!  I suppose seeing I have been up for a couple hours I am anxious about this.  I will hopefully be posting a good news later!

#Mamavation Monday

>
So last week I decided to schedule in my workouts....that worked a couple days, but found my house too messy one day and needed to clean instead of workout...although I was washing walls and light fixtures and stuff so it kind of felt like a workout.  I got in two regular workouts this week and then did some outside stuff a couple days also, so moved more than I have the past couple months.

I am 14 weeks and now into my second trimester. I weighed myself one day last week and have gained 5 lbs since I knew I was pregnant(or since applying for the last mamavation campaign).  Yeah I know I really shouldnt have gained that much.  I know I need to keep moving and work on eating good still too.  I go tomorrow for my second OB appt and anxious to hear the baby's heartbeat.  I am officially in maternity clothes too as I couldnt button pants that I could last week. (Measured waist and have gone up 2") Gotta thank my friend MaryAnn for letting me borrow her maternity stuff.  It is also nice that I had lost weight and was no longer in plus sizes.  This has made finding maternity clothes a lot easier.  Last pregnancy(6yrs ago) I had a really hard time as finding plus size maternity is very difficult.  So now I really know I need to get moving more and eating better so that I can fit into my newer sizes after having this baby!  I know the baby doesnt need the junk ...I just gotta quit giving into temptations!

So this week Subway is sponsoring mamavation again!  Love Subway and their fresh fit meals!  Thanks for sponsoring!  They have been challenging one of the biggest losers contestants, Shay...and she will be on Mamavation TV tonight.

csnstores.com and future review

>
I will soon be doing a review for csnstores.com  and have been wowed by all the products and areas that these online stores cover.  I try to look into many products that may help make my home/life easier having a child with a disability.  csnstores.com  has really made it easy to find items that really help.  We have had many discussions about remodelling our bathroom, and with CSNstores.com you can find things like bathroom vanities right online. Being able to research and find products online really gives you many ideas.

I also love that csnstores.com has so many categories from home medical equipment, to toys and outdoors.  I have been searching for things like these to make it easier for Kennedy to have fun and be safe outdoors.  I will be doing a review soon from csnstores.com for a sunshade for her stroller.  I am really hoping this will work well and allow her to be able to enjoy the sunny days like the rest of us.  So I will let everyone know how this item is as soon as we can really test it out.

disclosure: csnstores.com will be providing me with a free item to review for my honest opinion.

#Mamavation Tv

>
So last night Mamavation TV had guests @FeliciaTaub and @MathewTaub on talking about healthy living.  They gave us the idea of scheduling your workouts like appointments.  I keep a calendar of all our families appointments and decided to look at it and do exactly that....I scheduled 5 workouts for this week and next week.  I chose times that would work with what is going on that day and my daily schedule.  So there should be no excuses for not working out.  I think most are scheduled for 7am which is a pretty quiet time at my house.  Typically I am up before then and not really doing anything.  I have actually been pretty lazy lately sitting on the couch using the quiet time to watch tv.  Now I am going to do 30-60 minutes of exercise.

So are you skipping those workouts....saying I will do it later and then comes and goes.  Try scheduling them as appointments.  I think it is going to work!

Mamavation Monday

>
Well what can I say...I am pregnant and unmotivated.  I have been using that as an excuse to eat some junk food and to not exercise to much.  I had such good intentions this past week.  Exercised Monday and said I was going to everyday...well that was the only day.  I ate pretty good during the week, but broke into the cookies and my pregnancy craving of white cheddar popcorn.  Then asked my hubby to get me some junk last night and he bought enough to last the whole pregnancy...well it should last that long but might only last the week.  I am terrible.  I am afraid to go to the doctors next week and see how much I have gained already.

I am going to be realistic here and not say I am not going to eat that candy in the fridge....I just know I cant do that.  So my goal this week is to not eat too much at once and to continue eating the good stuff like my oatmeal for breakfast and my fruits and veggies.

I am also going to have a goal to get in 4 days of exercise this week!

We could also try some FlatOut bread which is sponsoring Mamavation this week.  I would love to win some of this.  They are really good.  I have bought them while trying to find healthier lower calorie options for my sandwiches and pizzas.  I have used them to make some pizza which was pretty good and to make wraps...which end up huge and I only end up eating half instead of a whole sandwich.  They are a great option for cutting calories.

Once Upon a Baby Brother by Sarah Sullivan

>

Questions and Answers with Sarah Sullivan, author of Once Upon a Baby Brother

1. How did you get the idea for Once Upon a Baby Brother?

As often happens, the first few lines came into my head. I heard the voice of a young girl telling her stories. It soon became clear that she had certain issues with her younger brother Marvin. Sadly, the entire story did not come so easily. Once I had the beginning, it took a lot of plain, old-fashioned work to find my way to the end.

2. Once the idea came to you, what happened next? Did you jot it down right away? Let it simmer?

I took down those first few lines right away. Then I jotted down various lines that might fit somewhere, not necessarily in the order in which I was writing them down. I knew that Lizzie would make Marvin the villain in her stories. And I always knew it would be a funny story But, I had trouble with the dramatic structure, (a common problem for me), until Melanie Kroupa expressed interest in the manuscript. With her expert and inspired guidance, the story started to develop the dramatic arc it needed.

3. What did you find the most challenging about writing this book? The most rewarding?

The most challenging part of writing this story . . . hmm. There were two major challenges. The first challenge was figuring out how to integrate the home story with the school story in the space of a 32-page picture book. The second challenge was figuring out how to succinctly tell the story of turning Marvin into a comic book hero. My editor and Tricia Tusa had A LOT to do with making that work! Creating a picture book is truly a collaborative enterprise!

4. How did the illustrations come about?

People are often surprised to learn that writers do not select their own illustrators – ( at least, not usually). Once Melanie and I finalized the text, she began looking for an illustrator. As you might imagine, I was THRILLED when she mentioned Tricia Tusa's name and was DOING BACK FLIPS when Tricia agreed to illustrate the book. As time passed and I had the opportunity to see sketches and then, proofs with color art, the joy and excitement continued to grow.

5. You have written two other picture books, Dear Baby: Letters from Your Big Brother, and Root Beer and Banana. How does your writing process compare from book to book?

That's a good question. The process has actually been quite different from one book to the next. I wrote the first draft of Dear Baby long before I started writing Root Beer and Banana. Dear Baby came about because my then 7-year-old son was talking about how well (or sometimes, not so well) two of his friends got along with their little sisters. I wondered how my own son would get along with a younger brother or sister if he had one. I also thought about the way my older brother used to complain about how much I used to bother him when I was little. Add to that the fact that I had just finished reading Lee Smith's epistolary novel, Fair and Tender Ladies, which meant that I was thinking about ways to tell stories through letters. All of these thoughts swirled around in my head and the first draft of Dear Baby was the result.

Root Beer and Banana, on the other hand, came directly out of a picture book workshop led by George Ella Lyon. She guided us through a writing exercise in which she directed us to focus on the details of a particularly vivid memory and then write a poem about it. I remembered a summer spent with my grandparents in a small town on the Rappahannock River in Virginia. I wrote a poem about going with my grandfather to buy a popsicle at a mom-and-pop grocery called Mister Mac's. I put the poem away for a while, as George Ella suggested that we do. Some time later, I was sitting up late reading one night when the voice of a young girl came into my head. "My name's Miracle," the girl said, "on account of the doctor said Mama couldn't have any more after my brothers, but I came anyway." I have no idea why this young girl appeared out of thin air one night – but she did and I knew instinctively that she belonged in the world of my poem. When I added Miracle to what I had already written, the story began to take shape immediately.

6. How did you know you wanted to become a writer? (Or: When did you begin to think of yourself as a writer?)

I guess I have a little bit in common with my main character in that, like Lizzie, I have always loved to tell stories. The writing fever really took hold once I learned to read in first grade. I started reading everything! Books, magazines, comics in newspapers, cereal boxes, the courtesy light sign on the dashboard of my grandfather's Oldsmobile – everything! And I started writing stories too. My first story was about a dead bird I found lying in the grass in our yard. I know that sounds a bit morbid, but the bird was so lovely. It was a cardinal and it made me sad to see it lying there so still. I had to write about it. I suppose, then, like now, a lot of my motivation for writing came from a need to try and understand why things happen the way they do.

Later on, my best friend, Nelle, and I had a secret club in a room in the basement of her house in Colorado. We collected Sugar and Spike comic books and wrote comic books with our own characters. Wait a minute -- This is starting to sound familiar . . .

I still have trouble calling myself a writer, even though I write every day. But, I have come to understand that, no matter what I call myself, I will always write. I will always tell stories. It's a need. I'm unhappy if I don't write.

7. What is the best piece of writing advice you have ever received?

Anne LaMott's advice in Bird by Bird is pretty hard to beat. Give yourself permission to write terrible first drafts. (Okay. She didn't use the word terrible.)

8. What advice do you have for young writers—especially those with little brothers ;-)?

There is no better training for a writer than to read. Read all the time. Read all different kinds of things. And then follow your passion and, as one of my writing teachers, Jane Resh Thomas, advises her students, write what moves you. Write about things that you care passionately about.

9. When you aren’t writing, what are some of your favorite things to do?

Long walks, reading, canoeing, theater (both from the audience and backstage), and travel.

10. Do you have a muse like the main character in your book does?

Hmm. A muse? Not really, although my husband has suggested it's a little odd that I've written two books involving sibling rivalry. I am inspired by the work of other writers. My list of favorites is long and changes constantly. Some of the people whose work I find particularly inspiring are Eudora Welty, Sharon Creech and Kate DiCamillo. I love certain works like The Great Gatsby and the opening pages of My Antonía. Lately, I've been completely knocked out by Colm Toibín and Column McCann. And I go back to some of John Cheever's stories with regularity. But, ask me tomorrow and I will probably give you a completely different list.

We were so lucky to receive a copy of Once Upon a Baby Brother, and loved it! The story was fun and very entertaining, just like the two characters Lizzy and Marvin. Lizzy has the life, until baby brother Marvin comes along.  Marvin gets so much attention and makes so many messes...it just does not make for happy times for Lizzy.  Lizzy is such a storyteller and goes from seeing Marvin as a villian to hero in her stories.  My children loved Lizzy's stories and Marvin's baby mishaps.  I loved the bonding that goes on in the book.  It makes me think of how most siblings are; that they have that love hate relationship at times.  It was such a fun story that is great for any child, but especially great for those with siblings.  This will be a great one to pull out after my kids have to start dealing with a baby again.

The illustrations were really great too.  They fit so well with the story and could tell the stories themselves, which is great for my prereader.  He loves looking at the pictures, then pointing out some sight words that he knows and trying to tell the story.  I highly recommend this fun book!

McDonald's recalling Shrek Glasses

>

Just having a great houseparty hosted by McDonalds to promote Shrek Forever After I have received two of the shrek glasses.  Our houseparty was great and McDonalds was very generous with all the fun stuff we received...but I am sad about this recall.  The recall is said to be more dangerous for children after long term exposure...but being pregnant and having been using these glasses for the past couple weeks makes me nervous.  Anyways...here is an article about the recall

LOS ANGELES — Cadmium has been discovered in the painted design on "Shrek"-themed drinking glasses being sold nationwide at McDonald's, forcing the burger giant to recall 12 million of the cheap U.S.-made collectibles while dramatically expanding contamination concerns about the toxic metal beyond imported children's jewelry.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the voluntary recall early Friday, warned consumers to immediately stop using the glasses; McDonald's said it would post instructions on its website next week regarding refunds.

The 16-ounce glasses, being sold for about $2 each as part of a promotional campaign for the movie "Shrek Forever After," were available in four designs depicting the characters Shrek, Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots and Donkey.

The CPSC noted in its recall notice that "long-term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects." Cadmium is a known carcinogen that research shows also can cause bone softening and severe kidney problems.

In the case of the Shrek-themed glassware, the potential danger would be long-term exposure to low levels of cadmium, which could leach from the paint onto a child's hand, then enter the body if the child puts that unwashed hand to his or her mouth
.

Fitness Friday: Reach Right with I Can't Believe Its Not Butter

>
Are you looking for a healthier alternative to butter?  Yeah, me too!  I have really cut my butter intake down a lot.  I have been watching how I use butter by either skipping it all together or have switched to sprays or spreads like I Cant Believe It's Not Butter.  I Cant Believe It's Not Butter soft spread contains no hydrogenated oils, so there's no trans fat and 2 grams or less saturated fat per serving, and 70% less saturated fat than butter!  It is also a great source of Omega 3 ALA and no cholesterol.

I recently received a coupon to choose a free I Can't Believe Its Not Butter product.  I have been using their fat free spray for quite some time now.  With the spray you get a very light buttery flavor with out the guilt of all the fat and calories.  For my free product I decided to try their original spread.  With summer here I love to have some of my favorites with butter...so having this to spread on items like sweet corn has been wonderful.  It is creamy and I actually like the flavor better than butter!  There are just some items you want or need butter...but I do have to say that if you start using the fat free spray for toppings you really get used to the less buttery flavor and can taste the flavor of the foods themselves!

Donner the Western Dragon

>
Houston, TX, - July 1, 2009 - Author Suzanne Davis Marion's new book, Donner the Western Dragon, teaches children to be proud of their unique personality traits and talents.

Donner the Western Dragon lived in a cold northern forest with his parents, brother and sister, and several other dragon families. Western dragons were noted for their warlike and fierce demeanor. The young dragons spent much of their spare time in rough-and-tumble games, snorting fire at one another, wrestling and fighting. While all the other young dragons were tumbling about and breathing fire all over the grass, flowers and trees, Donner much preferred romping and playing with his best friend, Una.

Everyone found it strange that Una should be Donner's best friend, as Una was a unicorn, an animal noted for its gentle disposition. Donner's father and the other dragons mocked Donner for his quiet demeanor. They accused him of behaving like a peaceful Eastern dragon. He was an embarrassment to them. In an unexpected twist of fate, Donner's unique personality and talents enabled him to intervene in a frightening situation, and become a hero, appreciated and commended by all.

About the book:

Donner the Western Dragon by Suzanne Davis Marion
ISBN: 978-1439252048
Publisher: BookSurge Publishing
Date of publish: Nov, 2009
Pages: 40
S.R.P.: $14.99

About the author/illustrator:

Author Suzanne Davis Marion grew up in Tucson, Arizona, and has lived in Houston, Texas for many years. She is a singer, pianist and composer. Several years ago she established Lullabies By Suzanne (www.lullabiesbysuzanne.com), offering personalized lullabies and play songs for babies and children. She performs on a regular basis with other musicians. Her seven grandchildren provide endless inspiration for stories.

Houston artist Marj Hales is originally from North Dakota. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Oklahoma. Happy watercolors of bright florals and whimsical animals are among her favorite subjects, reflecting an inner joy that she hopes to communicate to others.

My thoughts:
This was a moving story.  I think children will love Donner's character, as he is gentle yet shows how heroic he can be.  It is a nice story to teach children to do what they love and be who they are.  They should not be ashamed of who they are, even if they do not meet others expectations.  I think the story is best suited for five to ten year olds. The illustrations were really cute and whimsicle as flowing watercolors.

The Yellow Hummer by Ivent Graham-Morgan

>
A broken Christmas, a saddened child and a heartbroken grandmother are the elements of this touching story for beginning readers which shows that people are always more important than things.

About the book:

The Yellow Hummer by Ivet Graham-Morgan
ISBN: 978-1-4327-4784-8
Publisher: Outskirts Press
Date of publish: Feb 25, 2010
Pages: 34
S.R.P.: $19.95

Set in a non-traditional home of a son, a working mother, a grandmother and no father, The Yellow Hummer tells the story of four-year-old Jordan, whose grandmother accidentally ruins his bright new Christmas toy. After crying himself to sleep that night, cuddling the damaged toy, he awakes to go and find his grandmother and to show her the empathy, respect, buoyancy and love that he knows will help lift the remorse she feels.

This is a great story to remind children to forgive others and think about others feelings.  While Jordan is so upset that his grandmother broke his toy, he realizes it was an accident and her feelings meant more than the toy.  I think this is also great to remind children that Christmas time should be about the season and enjoying time with our families, not about the material gifts they receive.  The story itself was not overwhelmingly exciting, but the message really stands out!

About the author:

Ivet Graham-Morgan has had fulfilling careers in education, banking and law enforcement; but she has always been a writer at heart. A single parent, she had to wait until her sunset years to find the luxury of free time to follow that path. Now, surrounded by her children and grandchildren, she has returned to her first love, writing. She especially enjoys writing stories for her grandchildren.  For more information or to contact the author visit:  www.outskirtspress.com/ivetgrahammorgan

I just gotta say I love how supportive Bob has been while I have been trying to lose weight.  For the past year he has been tyring to encourage me and has been really supportive...and even before he never put me down for my weight.  It took a long time and I got down to a 12...which yeah I know isnt small, but it felt great fitting into those.  Now I am pregnant and have already started getting a gut as I havent been smart the past month.  I was surprised I still fit into one pair of size 12 capris today.  I was talking about the 12 shorts being too tight and he was so nice.  He told me not to worry as he knew I would get back in those after the baby and would most like get even smaller.  He said he knew how committed I was and knew I would do it!

So tomorrow...I am getting rid of the junk food.  Ok except a little chocolate as he has been pushing me to eat a tiny bit of chocolate every day.  When I was pregnant with Zach I had read that a little chocolate every day made a happy baby...yeah so that was my excuse to eat some...and you know Zach was the most content baby.  He really didnt fuss much at all and was a pretty happy baby.
