Mamavation Sista follow along

>
So this will be my new weekly schedule.  I will post Saturdays(linking to mamavation) and Wednesdays(linking to blog the weight away).  Wednesday I was bummed as I hadnt lost any weight since the following Wed.  while I had been exercising and adding weights and ate pretty good.  Then Wednesday was my bday and I celebrated by eating like crap...and it left me feeling like crap.  I really have come to the conclusion that my body just cant handle that anymore!  That is a good thing right.  I ate too much for dinner last night also and again felt like crap the rest of the night.  Wednesday I didnt even exercise, where yesterday I decided to get another workout in(having worked out a short 15 min in the am).  I was so tired and didnt have any energy...I think it really has to do with the overeating.  I did somehow lose 1 pound though.  Anyways...I know I cant handle that ...why eat too much if it is just going to make me feel even worse!

So I have made up my mind ...NO More!  If I want to splurge a little...make it a little and not go hog wild!  I have only done one kettleworx workout this week, as my shoulder was sore(still is a little).  I started doing it again on Thursday and did the core workout.  That was a good one as it didnt have a lot of stuff lifting over my head.  I made it through the whole workout without needing a break.  So that was one goal met...although we will see how the todays resistance kettleworx goes.  I think the resistance and cardio definitely make you sweat more than the core does.  So I will try my hardest today to get in every repitition, but may need to skip a couple that might bother my shoulder. Ok so I typed that up earlier today...my son got on computer so I am just getting back on here to finish.  Since then I have injured myself again this week.  I was just cooking him some mac and cheese and twisted and now my back is sore!  What the heck!  I dont injure myself working out, but doing nothing really.  My shoulder was after sleeping and now my back after cooking.  I am thinking I am doing different workouts and must be my muscles in those areas arent quite used to what I am doing and pain is showing up at any random time.  I also think that because my shoulder has been sore I have been lifting things(like my daughter) a little more with my back, and I also started doing hula hoop which I havent done in a few weeks...so that is probably why my back is sore.  So anyways...I decided to skip the kettleworx today because I know between the two sore areas there is no way I would get through it.  I did workout some already, doing some yoga for 20 min. and step aerobics for 15min.  I might try to get in a little more in a little bit.

I have also decided to not only get in two workouts at least 5 days a week...but during the week I am going to do at least 20 minutes before breakfast, in hopes to get that metabolism going. I figure I have 30 minutes between getting my son on the bus and getting my daughter up so I might as well workout M-F during that time.  Then I can get in two different workouts and really keep my metabolism burning those calories.

I was really happy going shopping this week.  I was able to go down to a size L for exercise pants, and one pair was even baggy!  I need to go buy some new tshirts toom, as a lot are really baggy.

So my goals for this week are to try to workout even if I have some pain...hopefully it will go away soon without needing to see doctor.  I am going to try to make my dinner portions smaller and no more overeating.  I am doing good making things healthier, so I will continue with that too.  I am hoping to get down at least one more pound by my next weigh in...that will make my weight loss at a total of 50 lbs! So I am off to read some of the mamavation moms confessionals...as my confession is I havent watched them yet!  I am trying to hop on twitter at least once a day to give some support!

My weight chart

I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Fitness Friday: Are your children at risk for being overweight?

>
I was just introduced to a great resource for families looking for solutions on getting their children to eat healthy and have fun doing it!  The new book, Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right by Joanna Dolgoff, MD is just what many families need.

(You can click HERE to check out more youtube videos showing many success stories using the Red light, green light, eat right.)

By using a fun way to teach children what foods are healthy and good for them, we can help our children either maintain or become a healthy weight. Dr. Dolgoff does a great job listing many many popular foods with a red, yellow or green light. This is an easy way for children to see which foods they can eat readily(green light foods), which foods to go slow on(yellow light foods)and which foods to only incorporate occassionally(red light foods). By labeling the foods this way it lets your child see that there really are no foods that are off limits, just that they need to set limits on those foods. The fun wording of the plan makes it so you can actually use this kind of like a game for children. Each child is expected to make some "pit stops" along the way...and there are foods that are so good for them that they are considered "free fuel". I can see this as a very easy way for the whole family to work together on planning menus.

I really like how Dr. Dolgoff starts the book out with the chapter on "coming to terms: Is your child really overweight". In this chapter and the next "learning the rules of the road", she talks about how to calculate your childs BMI, what that means, how to talk to your child about their weight and eating healthy and how to incorporate all of this into the red light, green light, eat right plan. Just giving advice to parents on how to talk to their kids about this makes this book worth the read!

The book then goes in depth on how the plan works with each meal...how to eat healthy breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks. She gives so many alternatives to higher calorie or fat foods and how to make these into "green light" foods. She gives sample meals for each of these sections, along with pictures and recipes for some really yummy kid friendly foods. I am totally trying out the cookies and brownies, as well as some of the main entrees that she gives recipes for. They look wonderful!

If you have ever kept any kind of rewards or charting system for your child, then I think you will find this easy to follow with your child. She gives specific guidelines using the green, yellow and red lights on a chart for your specific child(depending on their age, gender and bmi). The charts are based on how many green light foods the child should have for breakfast, am snack, lunch, pm snack and dinner. She gives suggestions on ways they can swap some yellow or red light foods into this. I think this is a way that the kids can then start following these charts by themselves and choosing healthy foods for themselves.

I love how she talks about special celebrations and dining out and how all these foods fit into the red light green light eat right program. She also gives many personal experiences/struggles/successes which really help the reader put this plan into perspective.

Although my son is on the lighter size, he really does not eat very healthy. He is very picky. I really thought of all of this while reading this and think this book can really help me get him to eat healthier. It really made me think of how the food is fuel for his body and letting him eat the junk food is not helping him, even if he is not gaining excess weight from it. I would recommend this book to any parent who either wants to help their child eat better to lose weight or just become healthier!

Every girl needs flowers!

Giveaway closed.
Congratulation AF_Wife!

So show your little girl just how special she is with Flowerz in her hair!

For Kennedy it has always been difficult for her to wear the girly dresses, skirts and shoes.  Having a disability where she can not walk and needing to wear orthotics takes away from some of the pretty dress up.  One way we have liked to make her feel special and girly is with hair accessories.  Unfortunately where headbands has been another area that is difficult as most do not stay on her head.  We do a lot of clips and pony tail holders.

We recently received some items from Flowerzinherhair.com to try out.....and we LOVE them!  When I was looking around at all the different flowers and bows I just couldnt believe all the wonderful styles, patterns, and colors.  They are all so beautiful!  They have wonderful flower clips with all different colors and sizes.  Above is Kennedy with their brown beanie and a large natural flower clip.  She got a lot of compliments wearing this combination.  With their beanies what is nice is you can put a ribbon through them or any of their clips.  I like that we can mix and match.  I am definitely getting more beanies and all kinds of clips to dress her up even more.  The prices are great too!  You can get the beanies for $7 and add a ribbon for $2 or a large flower for $4...or buy them separately and add any flower or clip you would like.  I want to get one of these butterfly clippies to add to a beanie.  Also they offer free standard shipping with any order over $10!

Besides all their pretty flowers, they also have beautiful bows.  They are adding new styles all the time too.  You can custom design these with colors and prints that you would like as well as the type of clip you would like.

I love their "cute as a button" clips and ponytail holders.  I love all the patterns that you can have the button covered with.  I think the ponytail holders are simple yet very cute(I would wear those myself).  I love how the single colored flower is fancied up by the simple decorated button.

The clips and flowers are made so nicely also.  The clips stay in the hair very well, which I love, as so many barretts just fall out of Kennedys fine hair.  I am not sure exactly how the flowers or embellishments are put on the clips, but they are very sturdy.  Kennedy pulled on them and they did not come apart.  With that said, they are still handmade so caution is needed around young children or babies because of choking hazards.  (and unfortunately they are not chew proof...ask my dog who got ahold of our favorite flower when I walked out of the room.....naughty dog!)

Besides the great flowers and hair clips, you have to check out the beautiful bracelets.  Again I can not believe the prices...they are so affordable and will grow with your child!

I think these wonderful hair accessories and bracelets would make a great gift for the little girls in your life, whether it is for welcoming a new baby, to birthdays, holidays, or school spirit your girls are going to love these.  They also have a great selection of veils and halos for first communion or weddings!!!!

Amy has been very kind to offer a giveaway for my readers!!!  One lucky reader will get a $25 gift certificate to purchase any items of her liking at Flowerz in her hair!   To enter:  visit Flowerzinherhair.com and tell me what you would buy with your gift certificate.

Triaminic Thin Strips ~ 48 hr giveaway

Giveaway closed.
Congratulations Jessica!
Should I send my child to school or keep him home? This question is asked so many times by parents, especially now with H1N1. We always question is it just a cold or could it be the flu. That's why the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and Triaminic® have partnered to create "Sick Day Guidelines: Making the Right Call When Your Child Has a Cold."

Consider keeping your child home if he or she:
  • Has a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher
  • Has been vomiting
  • Has symptoms that prevent him or her from participating in school, such as:
    • Excessive tiredness or lack of appetite
    • Productive coughing, sneezing
    • Headache, body aches, earache
    • Sore throat*
*A minor sore throat is usually not a problem, but a severe sore throat could be strep throat even if there is no fever. Other symptoms of strep throat in children are headache and stomach upset. Contact your pediatrician as your child needs a special test to determine if it is strep throat.

The flu is serious! Call your pediatrician at the first sign of flu symptoms, which typically come on suddenly, including:
  • High fever
  • Chills
  • Head ache, body aches, ear ache
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Dry cough
If you're unsure about the best way to treat your child's cold or flu, ask your school nurse, doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare provider.
Click here to learn more about how to prevent the flu.

Head on over to Triaminics Sick Day Guideline  and you can download the sick day guideline tip sheet to keep handy for yourself.  While you are there take their "test your sick day quiz".  You can also check out their flu tracker and see if there are low or high number of flu cases in your area.

Triaminic wants to get the word out about cold and flu season and would like to offer one of my readers a prize pack while doing this!  The prize pack includes 4 boxes of Triamic Thin Strips, with 14 strips in each package.  This will be a quick giveaway, only 48 hrs!  So go check them out and enter soon!

To enter:  Take the Triaminic "test your sick day quiz" and leave a comment telling me how many questions you answered correctly.

Weigh in Wednesday

>

ok so I am off to a not so great day already...what the heck!  First my son wakes up at 5:30 am cause my house is cold...so early start to the day.  Then I weigh in this morning I find I have not lost any weight this week :(
I dont understand why, as I have exercised everyday and have ate fairly well.  I even exercised twice a day a few days and have added in weights 3 days too.  Errr...it makes me mad.  Then this morning I was blowing out a candle and couldnt get it to go out, so I got closer and got wax all over the coffee table, all over my face, glasses, and hair!  Yeah...well then I went to do laundry and thought I saw that my dog was naughty and left a pile of you know what....yeah I turned to look and sure enough I step in a pile of it!!!  ok...so I am ready to climb back in bed!

As for my weight loss...I guess I am hoping that I am just gaining muscle.  The past week I added in kettleworx program and like it.  I was going to do it yesterday but Monday I woke up with a sore shoulder.  I really dont think it is from working out, as it didnt bother me at all Sunday.  I think I just slept on it wrong or maybe lifting Kennedy.  It is a little better today, so maybe tomorrow I will try it again.

For food I am going to enjoy some today, as it is my bday, but I will be good the rest of the week.  I am hoping to lose a couple pounds so that I will finally be down 50lbs.  So be on the look out...next week I better see a loss!

I should take a pic today of the lovely wax in my hair and on my cheek...but sorry I am not!

Custom pendant from Our Handmade Gifts

>

I recently had the pleasure of reviewing the process of ordering and receiving a custom pendant from OurHandmadeGifts.com Our Handmade Gifts have many jewelry pieces in their store that are ready for purchase.  Many of these jewelry pieces are made of beads and/ stones.  You can find jewelry for as low as $7!

The custom made pendants are designed using your uploaded photo.  They print the photo on canvas and then is attached to a clay backing.  These can be made into necklaces or keyrings.  Here is the pendant that was made for me.
The photo on the pendant looks a little grainy because of it being on canvas, but I love being able to have a photo large enough to see on the pendant.  The pendant itself is very smooth with a shiny clearcoat.   The custom pendants on Our Handmade Gifts retail for $49.97.  I think these would make a nice Mother's Day gift!  You can buy lockets, but trying to fit those photos of the kids in there is very difficult.  With a custom pendant you could have a family photo or your favorite snapshot right on the pendant.

Ordering from www.OurHandmadeGifts.com/shop ?  Get 25% off your order by using coupon code SHOP at checkout!

Top 5 New Years resolutions for getting healthy and fit in 2010

>

As a chance to win a copy of Your Shape Wii game I am going to share my top 5 new years resolutions for getting healthy this year.

1. watch portions:  One of my biggest struggles is not over eating at a meal.  So this year my resolution is to keep to small portions...and wait at least 15 minutes before taking seconds if I am still hungry.  I also am going to load my plate with lots of veggies to fill up.

2. switch to whole grains: This I have been doing for a while and am doing really well with.  I pretty much only use whole wheat bread  or whole grains.  I have recently been switching my pastas to whole wheat.  I also use whole wheat tortillas and baking mix.  I am also adding in flax meal and trying to do more oatmeal for breakfast.  I love my cereals, so I am trying to do oatmeal instead of cold cereals at least half of the days.  I also have been doing low sugar in those items.  Like eating pancakes with blueberry topping instead of syrup, or adding raisins and cinnamon to oatmeal instead of spoonfuls of sugar.

3. only eat healthy snack:  When I started dieting a year ago I would buy those 100 calorie snacks packs.  Well I found I would end up eating too much doing that.  Now I am trying to limit snacks to just once a day and I am doing more whole foods like fruits or nuts.  I do occassionally want something more snackish, like crackers or popcorn.  So for those I do the low fat 100 cal popcorn and do whole wheat crackers.

4.  exercise twice a day:  I tend to work out in the evening mostly, but am trying to get in two workouts at least 4-5 days a week.  For those I try to get in something that will get my metabolism going for the day.  I like doing those interval type workouts on the Wii doing some aerobics and strength training.  I try to do things that switch the pace around so you are doing some hard, fast workouts and then some endurance types.  I love using the Wii fit plus, Easports active more workouts and golds gym as well as exercises that add in weights.

5.  add weights to exercise routines:  This is the newest for me....adding weights to at least 4 of my workouts a week.  I am doing this by doing exercises by Denise Austin and kettleworx.  Both give you some quick exercises that you add weights to to get a good workout burning lots of calories by building muscle tone!  The more muscle you have the more calories you will burn ...I want to replace this fat with muscle!

Come share your resolutions at twittermoms and you could win a copy of Your Shape game with Jenny McCarthy, by ubisoft.

Flip Along Fun giveaway

 Giveaway Closed.
Congratulations EllieB!

Are you looking for a fun and education book for your toddlers, preschoolers, or early elementary aged children?  How about one that will grow with your child?  Flip Along Fun does just that.  This fun, creative book helps teach your children about numbers, colors, animals, and concepts like before and after, sequencing, pairing, and addition.  I recently reviewed this on Sunday, you can read my full review by clicking HERE, and my kids loved it!

Your child flips through the pages to create their own story.  The beginning and middle pages each have a number, funny characters, and silly rhymes.  They then take those two and need to count or match to find the corresponding ending page.  It is a very fun and educational book that can grow with your children from toddlers to elementary aged.  It really integrates playing and reading together in this great book!

I have two special offers for my readers!  Thanks to the author, Mike Dowling, all my readers can take advantage of a nice savings and one lucky reader can win a copy!

Mom's Monday Madness

>
Well we have a 3 day weekend here...no school today.  Kind of nice actually having a pj day(ok more like workout clothes day).  I was going to do a EAsports active workout with my friend MaryAnn, but I woke up with my shoulder very sore.  It didnt bother me while working out yesterday or at all yesterday.  I am thinking I slept on it all night as I woke up on that shoulder and dont recall tossing around at all last night.  So I am going to just do some leg/core workouts today.

Last week Kennedy had an appointment with her neurologist.  She had us start giving her a very small dose of her clonazepam in the AM to see if that would help with her shoulder and neck.  We see her epileptologist on Friday and will see what she thinks.  I like having them work together to see her....double coverage and two opinions.  The tremors are still there but she has been turning her head a little more since getting the botox.  Friday's appointment is the last for a month!  She has had appointments every week lately so it will be nice to have a few weeks off.

Saturday was the benefit in Kennedy's honor back in our hometown area.  THANK YOU very much to all the family and friends that help put the benefit on.  Thank you to all those that donated money or gifts(for raffles).  We really appreciate what everyone did!  They were able to raise some very needed money that will go to the united mitochondrial disease foundation.  This will help with research on treatments and to support those affected by a mitochondrial disease.  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

Mamavation follow along

>
Congratulations @FrugalFemina and @lisasamples for making it to be this seasons Mamavation Moms!!!  I hope you and all those that are following along do really well with their journeys!

I think I did pretty good this week.  First I am not weighing in until Wednesday's.  That is my new weigh in day as a member of "blogging the weight away" at 4babyandmom.com I love blogging about weight loss and think the more groups I belong to to keep me accountable the better.  So for there we are to check in on Wednesdays and are doing team competitions on losing weight.  I think my weight will be good this week.  Last Wed when I weighed in I was surprised to have lost 2 pounds from what I weighed in on Monday.  I was still at that 2 pounds on Friday...I am hoping it went down further.

I did well watching what I ate this week.  I did snack Friday night as I felt hungry, but besides having some lucky charms my snacks all this week were really healthy.  I primarily stuck with blueberries or some fruit.  I added in flax meal this week also and really stuck to the whole grains.  Even today my team member and friend MaryAnn and I went healthy for the playoff games.  She made a pizza with whole wheat crust, homemade sauce and lots of healthy toppings like peppers, mushrooms, baked chicken, and broccoli.  It was delicious!!!  I made some homemade fruit salsa with fruits and berries and homemade whole wheat cinnamon tortilla chips.

I also started a new exercise program this week....Kettleworx (www.kettleworx.com) I am doing this every other day using a 10 lb kettlebell.  It is a great workout!  I was sore most of the week, but feel my muscles really kicking it up! I have worked through the soreness, as it is muscle soreness(not joints/bones). I also have been using the Wii and took a nice long walk one day.  I got in exercise 6 days this week totaling about 4 hours.

My challenge this week is to continue exercising at least 6 days a week.  I would like to get a little bit more in time wise also.  Three days I worked out twice this past week, and I would like to make that everyday.   I also would like to make it through the kettleworx dvds without needing to take a break or skipping a few repititions.    For eating I want to continue where I  have been this past week...although Wednesday is my birthday and I plan on having a greasy NY style pizza...so I will be good the rest of the week and exercise good that day...because I want that pizza and have been planning on having it for a month now!  I must say I was really really good with drinking this week too....I never had anything with calories at all this week.  All I drank was water or plain green tea!  OH wait I lied...I drank a cup of 1 % milk with one spoonful of nesquick.  OH well better than having real chocolate.

Storytime Sunday: Flip Along Fun

>

This week my children have had the pleasure of not only reading a story, but creating a story.  They have done this by playing/reading along with Flip Along Fun. How can you play with a book, you ask. Author Michael J. Dowling explains how the book works:

Flip Along Fun is a board book with nine pages. Each page is divided horizontally into three panels. The child starts creating the story by randomly picking any one of the nine panels on the left, and then continues by choosing any of the nine panels from the middle. In the process, the child is learning animals, colors, numbers, sequencing, rhymes, and beginning/middle/end.

To end the story and learn the concept of matching, the child finds the one panel on the right (there's always only one right match) that contains all of the animals pictured in the first two panels. When the animals match up, the numbers add up. So Flip Along Fun teaches addition, too!

For example, to learn what happened when "3 pink pigs dancing jolly jigs" (panel 1) "saw 2 yellow cats in very funny hats" (panel 2), the child looks for the one matching panel (panel 3) that contains 3 pigs and 2 cats. And there's the answer: "They all 5 had a laugh while they sat in the bath"! When the animal illustrations match up, the numbers add up!

Both Kennedy and Zach are really enjoying reading Flip Along Fun.  For Kennedy, she loves all the rhymes and silliness of the stories that we can create.  We can not wait to share this book with her class.  She is in a special education class and I think with the varying cognitive levels in her class this book will offer something for all of them.  Whether it is working on matching, counting or identifying colors, numbers and animals....There is something fun for all!

I think Zach gets the most out of the book.  He has always loved numbers, so having a number on every card in the story really drew him in.  He loves being able to point out all the numbers, count the animals, and now we are teaching him addition by adding in the third card.  This also really helps him creatively.  He has fun choosing which cards he wants to flip to next.

This book is recommended for 2-6 year old children.  I think these recommendations are right on.  I really can see this lasting that long.  The younger children can start out with some simple color, animal, or number recognition and the silliness of the stories...and then as they get older you can add in counting and then addition.

The illustrations, by Sarah Buell Dowling(wife of the author), are really cute.  They are very colorful and full of life.  She really brings out the silliness of the characters.  Just looking at the animals' faces make you want to smile.

Michael Dowling loves working with his wife and this is what he says when asked, "What is it like to work as a team?"
It's a hoot! I love watching her illustrate my ideas and bring them to life. We laugh a lot as she is drawing the characters and giving them personalities. Most authors and illustrators don't even know each other. But I think it's a big advantage for us to be able to work closely together. We're able to interact and improve the book as we go along.
As for the costruction of the book, this is another plus.  It is  large size (9" X 12")sturdy board book.  I agree that this large size makes it ideal for group settings, one-on-one interactions, or independent play. The pages are very sturdy and can withstand the young children flipping over and over.  It has a nice strong yet flexible spiral binding which also makes it easy for the children to handle and flip the pages.

I honestly can not find anything that I disliked about this book.  I would love to see more of them!
You can find Flip Along Fun and other fun educational toys(many that illustrator, Sarah Buell Dowling has helped create) at www.UndertheLamb.com.

You can purchase this at the Flip Along Fun website or from amazon for $17.99 (You may also see my review on amazon.)

Photohunt: theme Balanced

>

Here is Kennedy back in the day....working so hard ...look how well BALANCED she is on the swing.  Some days it is difficult to look at all the pictures of how much work she did then...and now she works so hard to just roll over(like my pic posted on Wed.).  This is why we really need to raise awareness for mitochondrial disease.  Please take the time and check out http://www.umdf.org/ to learn more about mitochondrial disease...you will see that research in that area is going to lead to developments in so many more diseases than we even think.

I want to take the time today to thank all our family and friends that are having a benefit in Kennedy's honor today to raise money for mitochondrial disease.  We wish we could be there!  Thank you to all that attend and/ donate.  If you would like to make a donation in Kennedy's honor, to the umdf you can click here

Rethink What Matters

>

Rethink what a revolution looks like, from going bare in public to what freedom feels like. Bare Escentuals, the mineral makeup pioneer, invites you to shake up that foundation and sound off on topics that are more than just skin-deep with their new campaign, Rethink What Matters.

Born from employees rethinking makeup itself – the beauty brand found looking good is not about using artificial gunk to cover imperfections, but about enhancing what you’ve got. In keeping with their wink-wink approach to marketing (Love MATTE Campaign), Bare Escentuals unveils thought-provoking taglines to help start honest conversations with your girlfriends about what really matters. For instance, one reads “Rethink Going Bare in Public. bareMineral’s SPF15 Foundation feels completely weightless, but gives you all the flawless coverage you need. Like you are wearing nothing at all.”

Bare Escentuals invites you to give rethinking a try, too. Every week at RethinkWhatMatters.com, a new discussion topic will be featured with five questions for you to answer and share with your friends by email, Facebook and Twitter. What’s in it for you? Well, good karma for one. And free products and other fantastic goodies. Plus for a few really lucky ladies, an even bigger reward that will definitely make rethinking worth your while.

Bare Escentuals will also be taking its message to the streets by dispatching a Quickie Van within select cities. The van, branded Rethink What Matters, pops up into a mini boutique complete with chandelier and a team offering “make-unders” and goodies.

Head over to RethinkWhatMatters.com today.  I took the quiz...I started off thinking like most, but the percentage got lower as the questions went on...Go check it out and see how your thoughts compare to others and take a chance to win some prizes.  You can find more info on the quickie vans there also.

So what matters to you...I am not really for public nudity.  I get pretty uncomfortable with the topic.  Nope never gone skinny dipping!  How about you?  I would definitly like the bare makeup...I am not one to wear a lot and like the more natural look.

Fitness Friday: Denise's Daily Dozen by Denise Austin

>
Giveaway closed.
Congratulations to Pixie13, anonymouse (gordyneve), and Wanda.

I was so happy to become part of the blog tour for this book, as I have been a fan of Denise Austin since I was a teen.  Her dvds and tv shows helped me lose some weight after having my son and before my wedding....now her new book "Denise's Daily Dozen" is helping me lose it this time around! This book gives great tips, meal plans and exercises.

I was actually reading this while I was at the hospital with my daughter for one of her 7 hour appointments...This was great.  I loved reading about the "fidget-ciser" and then being able to do them in our little corner while at the hospital.  These are great for times when you are talking on the phone, cooking dinner or doing the dishes.

I love all the tips she gives through out the book.  These include tips on cutting costs of food, serving sizes, boosting energy and many more.  I think many readers will find these really useful.  She also gives you checklists, shopping lists and  a section of 12 meals in 12 minutes.  The best parts of the book are her 3 week plans.  The main focus of the book is following her meal plans and her daily 12 minute exercises.

This is listed so great and it is really easy to follow.  With her meal plans she gives you enough for 3 weeks.  They list recipes and ingredients of protein, fat, veggie and fruits as well as the nutritional information and recommendations for men vs. women.  For some people, some of the meals might not be to your liking, but what is nice is that there is a big selection so you can pick a similar meal from a different day.

Along with the meals is the daily exercises.  She gives you descriptions and photos of all the exercises, with how long you should do each one.  She also gives recommendations on taking those exercises up a notch.  These are great...and believe me....even though they are only about 12 minutes long, you will work up a sweat and feel it!  What is great is that they focus on different areas everyday, that way you are switching up the workouts.

I really found this book interesting and very beneficial to my diet and workout plans.  I would definitly recommend it for those that are just starting out and even those that have been exercising for a while.  This can definitly be used in combination with her dvds or any other exercise routines also.

Denise has been so kind to stop by and answer some questions from my readers..... and if you would like more info about or from Denise go check her out on facebook or on her website, deniseaustin.com

A thousand words Thursday!

>

Dont mind that she is still in pjs and has bedhead....but I had to get a shot of her NOT on her back!  Yes ...Kennedy rolled over today!!!  She has not rolled over in a few months since having the neck tremors...but today she rolled...and it was to the opposite side of that her tremors pull her!  This makes me wonder if the botox she got last week did some good.  Maybe her neck or shoulder is less tight and she will be able to move around a little more!

What keeps women from being their best? Joyce has been helping women better themselves by helping identify emotional barriers and physical, mental, and spiritual obstacles in their lives for years. Now she provides another answer-confidence.

Our society has an insecurity epidemic, women in particular. Compensating by pretending to be secure-a common response-only leads to feelings of shame. Lack of self-confidence causes great difficulty in relationships of all kinds, and in marriage instances can even lead to divorce.

In THE CONFIDENT WOMAN, Joyce explores the seven characteristics of a woman with confidence, which include a woman who knows she is loved, who refuses to live in fear, and who does not live by comparisons. Joyce explains that confidence stems from being positive in your actions and living honestly, but most importantly from having faith, in God and in ourselves.

Are you looking for a little confidence?  Thanks to Hatchette book group five readers will be lucky enough to win a copy!  To enter:  Leave a comment telling me how you show your confidence or why you need to read this book.

Just a Mom

>
JUST A

MOM?

A woman, renewing her driver's license at the County
Clerk 's office, was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation.

She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.

"What I mean is, " explained the recorder,  "do you have a job or
are you just a ..?"

"Of course I have a job," snapped the woman.

"I'm a Mom."

"We don't list 'Mom' as an occupation, 'housewife'
covers it," Said the recorder emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in
the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall.

The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised,
efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like,
"Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar.."

"What is your occupation?" she probed.

What made me say it?  I do not know..... The words simply
popped out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations."

The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair and
looked up as though she had not heard right.

I repeated the title slowly emphasizing the most significant words..

Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written,
in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest,
"just what you do in your field?"

Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice,
I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't) In the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would
have said indoors and out).. I'm working for my Masters,
(first the Lord and then the whole family) and already have four
credits (all daughters).  Of course, the job is one of the
most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?)
and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it).

But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and
the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money."

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she
completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career,
I was greeted by my lab assistants -- ages 13, 7, and 3.
Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby) in the child development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.

I felt I had scored a beat on bureaucracy!  And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another Mom."
 Motherhood!

What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door.

Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce

>
 Giveaway Closed.
Congratulations Hotsnotty2 and Clynsg!

In 1968, Country Bob, Bob Edison perfected the sauce of his dreams.  Years later he began selling this sauce and in 1982 Country Bob Inc. became a company.  Today Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce, along with their bbq sauce, spicy all purpose sauce  and seasoning salt are sold around the nation.

I have had the pleasure to try out Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce.  This all purpose sauce is great if you would like something different than the traditional steak sauces, bbq sauces or ketchup.  To me it tastes like a combination of a steak sauce and bbq sauce.  It is a little sweeter than the traditional steak sauce, yet has a zing to it that the bbq sauce doesnt.  It tastes great on burgers and even fries.  It makes a great sauce for those cocktail weinnies or mini meatballs.  My personal favorite is on pork chops and last night I tried it on chicken breasts.  I loved it!  I was just visiting the Country Bob's website, checking out the wonderful recipes.  There are many yummy ideas on there.

You can purchase Country Bob's sauces all around the country...if you need to find a location you can check out their website to locate a store near you.  They even have a link to try a free bottle!

Courtesy of Country Bob's two lucky readers can win some of their All Purpose Sauce!  To enter:  Go to the Country Bob's recipe section and tell me one that you think sounds delicious.

Weigh in Wednesday "blogging the weight off"

>

After I decided to eat some junk last week and gained 1/2pound I have decided to be better this week...which I was happy to say I am actually down 2 pounds since Monday!  I am now at 181.  I have been hungry or wanting to snack the last couple nights, so I have been munching on frozen blueberries...definitly a lot healthier of a snacking option!  Yesterday I split my workouts up into two sessions.  I did 15 minutes and then 30 minutes.  This is what I am trying to do more often.  I tend to workout more at night, and need to get in some morning workouts so that I can get that metabolism going.  I have been loving my new Golds Gym Cardio workout game for the Wii and I think that is going to be my morning workout.  I like that it will create a workout for you and they are shorter...typically consisting of two 6 min boxing routines and then some form of exercise.  I also like the Denise Austins 12 minute workouts from "Denise's Daily Dozen"....both of these are quick workouts that typically get your heart rate up there and work those muscles!

I also have been tweeting with #mamavation and am now a Mamavation sista.  This morning I was asking about adding protein into breakfast without having to cook.  I got a great idea from @notdiyheather about adding flax meal.  I know flax seed was suggested from the book "eat your way to happiness" and I had it on my shopping list once, but then forgot about it.  I didnt realize it was a good source of protein.  I was checking out his benefits online and it sounds like it is really goooooooood for you.  So this is something I can just sprinkle on my cereals or yogurt and get the benefits...and dont have too cook something for breakfast.  I also found some recipes and saw a recipe using it for a pizza crust...I am just going to have to try it out.

So how is the other "blogging the weight off" teams doing???  Its the first week...are you getting motivated?!!

The night was always Abby Whitman's enemy. As a young girl she walked in her sleep, and one night, she started a fire that scarred her sister for life and left Abby with unbearable guilt . . . and a loneliness that echoes within her. Now Abby has begun blacking out again-with apparently fatal results. A car accident has killed the son of a prominent family. Even though the evidence seems to exonerate her, Abby is plagued by doubts-and soon by mysterious threats. Psychiatrist Dr. Jason Coble is intrigued by Abby and offers to help her explore the dark recesses of her mind.
I was on the edge of my seat reading Sleep No More, and by the end I was biting my nails!  I found this story very suspenseful and exciting.  I had a very hard time putting the book down.  I liked that for a romance, it was not full of steamy scenes but had just enough romance to make you fall in love with the characters.  It was a great suspense novel from start to end.  The story leaves you wondering all the W questions...who did it, when did that happen, why did he or she do it, what is going to happen next and where will he or she strike next.  Sleep No More is very entertaining and I loved it!

Five Fun Facts

1)  Susan has always had a deep seated fear of being stuck in a car submerged in water at night. She tapped into that fear when she wrote the accident scene in SLEEP NO MORE. To top it off, she set it in an ultra-creepy South Carolina Lowcountry swamp. This one kept her awake at night.
2)  During her young childhood years, Susan’s daughter was a sleepwalker. Luckily there was an alarm on the house, and she never made it outdoors.
3)  This book met its deadline even though during the last writing weeks Susan was battling a stomach virus. Therefore her “snack of the book” (see book pages on www.susancrandall.net for each book’s deadline snack) was box after box of mini-saltines.
4)  Susan’s son is also a fiction writer. His first novel is almost finished.
5)  Susan had some misconceptions about sleepwalking when she started developing this book. One of the main points she had wrong required her to totally adjust her plan for this story. Originally she’d intended to have Abby begin to recall scraps of memory as she worked with Dr. Jason Coble. As it turns out, sleepwalkers do not recall anything they do while sleepwalking. Research showed her the error of her ways.

I received a copy from Hatchette book group to review...and they are letting me giveaway five copies also!  If you like suspense you will love this.  To enter to win a copy:  Leave a comment telling me if you have ever had any sleepwalking experiences.

Mom's Monday Madness

>
Well my husband is the proud co owner of a business!!!  I was really nervous, but am glad he did this.  He bought a fish farm with his friend and friend's father.  Friday they officially closed and they are now the owners.  So now the fun starts!  This might get difficult with Kennedy going to doctors appointments as he might not be as available as he was....oh well we will have to make due.  As for her, last week she got botox.  We are supposed to start seeing some difference this week.  She does still keep it to the left, but have noticed it is less tight and I can move it to the right easier.  She goes Thursday to see one of her neurologists.  Otherwise we have a normal week.  Not a whole heck of a lot going on.

Mamavation Monday

>
Well this  past week I wasnt as committed as the previous couple weeks ...but I will start a new!  I will eat better this week, and will continue to exercise.  I ended up gaining, but fortunatly it was only 1/2 lb.  I just did another post earlier as I am joining another challenge, as well as doing the mamavation sistahood.  I posted my starting pic and measurements there.  Hopefully I can get lots of support with all these challenges.  I really want to do good this year!

So my challenges of last week was with food...I enjoyed it too much!  I dont really know why, but I just felt like eating some junk.  This week I will avoid those foods and will stick with healthy choices!  I did do ok exercising, but did not exercise as much.  I started a new game, Golds Gym Cardio workout, and then the following day I was SORE!  This is the first thing that has actually made my biceps sore.  I really like it, as it is a lot of fun!   It is a great workout for your legs and arms and to get that heart rate up there.

So this is the final week for the final mamavation mom contestants. congrats @Trulytrayce @Iamsucceeding @Mommybrain @LisaSamples @FrugalFemina!!! You can go to Mamavation to check them out and vote..only two will make it through.  Thursday night will be the twitter party to announce who they are, and for some great giveaways.  You really dont need to join, cause I would love to win  I mean, come join the fun and enter to win some awesome giveaways!

Blogging the Weight away: Intro

>
So today I start with a new challenge, "Blogging the weight away".  This is from the blog 4babyandmom.com  There are 4 teams listed below.  You can cheer us all on.  MaryAnn, Judy and myself are team red!
Go team Red!!!  So you will be seeing more posts about weight loss on here, hope you dont get sick of them.  I would love the support!  You will be seeing another post today for Mamavation Monday also, as I am going to continue to post those on Mondays as they have been a great support the last few weeks.  I also will be posting something on fridays, either reviews/wiimommies things, as well as blogging the weight away on Wednesdays.

So today you get the official before shots and measurements.  I do have to say that even though these are from today, these are not my official before shots.  For those that might not know I have been on this journey for a year now and have managed to lose over 40 pounds and have dropped from a size 18/20 to a size 14!  This morning I was trying to figure out what to wear to take a pic in.  I decided to put on the size 14 pants and a short sleeve top I am hoping will be too big come this summer.

Go team Red!!!
(me today)

I am also going to be honest and post my weight and measurements...ouch!  So here goes....Today my starting weight is 183(using my wii fit).  My measurements are waist 37 1/2", hips 42 1/2", Rthigh 26", Lthigh 25 3/4", chest 42", Rarm 14 1/2", Larm 14 3/4".  So hopefully we will see a big change in the following weeks!  OH and for those that want an age...uggh...I am going to be 36 pretty soon!

My goal is to lose at least 25 lbs in 6 months.  I will be mostly doing this by watching what I eat, and eating healthier foods.  I will mostly be using the wii to exercise with, besides going for walks and once it is nicer doing some outdoors activities.  My biggest fan is my son, who loves to exercise along with me!  I have enjoyed doing weekly weigh ins with MaryAnn and Judy and am glad we are on a team together!  Good luck to everyone on the other teams!  I really want to "blog the weight away" because I have found the thing that keeps me most motivated is by blogging about the journey.  I hate to post about failures and this really keeps me accountable.  I love the link ups and having others stop by to comment.  If I dont feel like anyone is reading then I dont try as hard.  When I get lots of comments...and have lots of other people's blogs to post on then I try harder!
