Hayseed is not your typical race horse. He had always loved himself, and loved wearing his white socks and red high tops. The day had come for him to race in his first race. He was picked on by Prince Perfect and he started to doubt himself and feel out of place. In the story Hayseed's First Race, Hayseed remembers to love himself for who he is and never let others make him feel like he doesn't belong. This is such a great message to kids. It is great to encourage our children to be themselves, everyone is special and everyone is unique. It is that uniqueness that may help them succeed! I loved the message of the story.
The illustrations are great too. At first I thought the cover was kind of simple looking and didnt know how much attention it would draw. It has a white cover with some simple block lettering for the title with a picture of the two racehorses on it. I obviously was wrong on the cover, as my son has not set the book down in a week. He even carries it to bed. I am thinking that the simpleness of the cover is what he is drawn to. That the racehorses take center stage and there is no distracting colors and designs. The illustrations throughout the book are really cute and I just love Hayseed and his red hightops.
I think the story is long enough for a great lesson to be learned, and short enough for early readers to read on their own, or keep the attention of toddlers. I think this would be a great one to share with your little ones and great for early readers. I would recommend it for ages 3-8. Although I think all children can relate to this story I think this would be a great one for any child like mine, that has a special need. Let them learn to not let anyone tell them they don't belong. This is one "winning" story!
