So you are probably wondering how the 3 Meal Magic diet is going...well I need more will power. Luckily breakfast is one meal I do good at and do well in the morning as long as I have my cereal. I do need to try to watch my portions as I tend to eat more than one serving size. As for the other meals, I havent been as good...but will be better next week as I start the challenge over at Youthful Tips.

The guests are Sheila Kelley (famed actress who uses pole-dancing techniques to teach women about accepting their bodies), Dr. Hyla Cass, who is world-renowned for women’s healthcare, and Andrea Albright, who lost 50 lbs and teaches others about healthy weight loss. (This Teleseries is a preview for an upcoming event by the same name in Los Angeles.) You can read about all of these speakers at http://www.wtlossinsideout.com/ if you wish.

What do you eat for breakfast?

>
Lets talk cereals...I know they recommend eating something with more protein for breakfast, but I love cereal. I have however been trying to eat cereal this is whole grain or higher in fiber, and that I do not need to add sugar to. I love oatmeal and cream of wheat but do not eat these that often, as I do not like them plain and have to add a couple scoops of sugar. I thought I would review a few cereals that are new to me.

Kellogg's Special K- cinnamon pecan flavor.
Kellogg’s® Special K® is a lightly toasted, lightly sweetened rice cereal, high in flavor. Enjoy Special K every day as part of a healthy, reduced-calorie diet. It’s an excellent source of 11 vitamins and minerals.
Nutritional information
I have tried the blueberry and my favorite fruit and yogurt flavor, but thought I would try something less sweet.  This was a great choice.  It had a nice cinnamon flavor that was not too strong.  The pecans were nice, as they were not too crunchy.  The texture of the flakes and pecans went well together.  It was a nice change to have something that wasnt fruity, although I personally like something sweet in the morning.  The fruit and yogurt Special K is still my favorite.  It is nice as you do not need to add sugar to any of them.

Raisin Bran Extra
Crunchy flakes, plump raisins, yogurty clusters, sweet cranberries, & almond slices
Nutritional Information

I have never been a huge fan of Raisin bran because mostly because the flakes soak up the milk too quickly.  I do not like soggy flakes.  I also tend to have to put too much sugar on, so that adds to much calories.  I am however a fan of Raisin Bran Crunch.  I love the flavor and texture.  I decided to try their new Raisin Bran extra.  This one wasnt as good as I thought.  It got soggy pretty quick like regular Raisin Bran, and had similar flavor.  The yogurt clusters were not that flavorful.  I did however enjoy the cranberries.  They were a really nice touch.  I didnt add sugar, but would probably like it more if I did.

Kashi Go Lean Crunch-Honey Almond Flax
Kashi GOLEAN Crunch! Honey Almond Flax cereal is a delicious combination of crunchy honey-sweetened 7-grain clusters, sliced almonds, and whole flax seeds. •500mg Omega-3•9g protein•8g fiber•15g of whole grains

Nutritional Information

When you first try this you may think it is too crunchy, but it softens in the milk.  Once it is softer it has a great texture and tastes great.  It has a nice flavor that is the perfect sweetness.  I really enjoy this one, as long as I let it get soft first.  This is a great Omega 3 source.

Ruth's Chia Goodness Cereal Apple Almond Cinnamon
Gluten free; No hydrogenated or trans fats; no artificial flavors; colors or synthetic vitamins; free from genetically -modified crops; low fat; outstanding source of fiber; excellent source of Omega 3, protein and calcium; made with raw ingredients with the exception of organic cane sugar.

Chia (Salvia Hispanica L) is quite possible the most nutritious seed ever. Lactose free, chia contains 6x the calcium of milk. It is an excellent source of fiber, but contains no gluten. With more Omega 3 than flaxseed, and 15-20% protein, it is an all-around superfood. They've combined the goodness of chia with other nutritious seeds: hemp and buckwheat, to help you power up in the morning, and keep you feeling great all day long.
• Chia was shown in a major clinical study to reduce cardiovascular risk factors for people with type 2 diabetes.  “Supplementation of Conventional Therapy With the Novel Grain Salba (Salvia hispanica L.) Improves Major and Emerging Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Type 2 Diabetes” Vuksan, et al. Risk Factor Modification Centre, St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, Ontario. Canada

Nutritional Information
This cereal you can eat hot or cold, which I thought was great as I love hot cereals.  At first it looks a lot like bird seed, as it is seeds.  You add either hot or cold milk or water, and let sit for about 5 minutes to absorb the liquid.  I decided to add hot milk.  When I first tried it I wasnt quite sure of the texture.  It has a very mixed texture as the nuts are crunchy, the fruit chewy, yet the seed get moist and has a texture I cant quite explain.  I wasnt a huge fan of the different textures, yet the flavor was great!  I loved the apples and raisins with the cinnamon and almonds.  It has a great aroma also.  I think the texture is something I can get used to to enjoy the flavor.  This would be a great addition for those needing gluten free and wanting the Omega 3. It is such a great start to the day having the fiber, omega 3, protein and calcium.  You can find some recipes at www.ruthshempfoods.com/recipes ...I might be trying the chia apple crisp soon!

• Suggested retail for 12 oz. package (approximately 11 servings of 2 Tbsp each): $7.50 U.S. and Canada

• Available at Whole Foods, select supermarkets and independent health food stores nationwide; www.ruthshempfoods.com

Trick or Treat for UNICEF

>
This October, make Halloween count by Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF. Doing so will help children around the world get things like water, education and medicine to the children who need it most. Your efforts will show that you believe ZERO children should be without the basic necessities that we often take for granted.

What does UNICEF do and what does UNICEF stand for?

For more than 60 years, UNICEF has been the world’s leading international children’s organization, working in more than 150 countries to address the ongoing issues that impact why kids are dying needlessly. UNICEF provides lifesaving nutrition, clean water, education, protection and emergency response, saving more young lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world. Every day, 24,000 children die from completely preventable causes like dehydration, upper respiratory infections, and measles. With the support of partnering organizations and donors alike, UNICEF believes we can bring that number down to zero. UNICEF has the global experience, resources, and reach to give children the best hope of survival. Participate or volunteer in the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign, and join us in our mission to reach zero, doing whatever it takes to save children’s lives.

"Say You're One of Them" Audiobook

>

Giveaway closed.
Congratulations CandieL, Shawn, and Sweeter the berry!

About the book:

Uwem Akpan's stunning stories humanize the perils of poverty and violence so piercingly that few readers will feel they've ever encountered Africa so immediately. The eight-year-old narrator of "An Ex-Mas Feast" needs only enough money to buy books and pay fees in order to attend school. Even when his twelve-year-old sister takes to the streets to raise these meager funds, his dream can't be granted. Food comes first. His family lives in a street shanty in Nairobi, Kenya, but their way of both loving and taking advantage of each other strikes a universal chord.

In the second of his stories published in a New Yorker special fiction issue, Akpan takes us far beyond what we thought we knew about the tribal conflict in Rwanda. The story is told by a young girl, who, with her little brother, witnesses the worst possible scenario between parents. They are asked to do the previously unimaginable in order to protect their children. This singular collection will also take the reader inside Nigeria, Benin, and Ethiopia, revealing in beautiful prose the harsh consequences for children of life in Africa.

Akpan's voice is a literary miracle, rendering lives of almost unimaginable deprivation and terror into stories that are nothing short of transcendent.

*One of Oprah's 2009 book Club selections...“Each one of these stories left me really gasping and profoundly moved.” – Oprah Winfrey

About the Author:

Uwem Akpan was born in Ikot Akpan Eda in southern Nigeria. After studying philosophy and English at Creighton and Gonzaga universities, he studied theology for three years at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. He was ordained as a Jesuit priest in 2003 and received his MFA in creative writing from the University of Michigan in 2006. Seed Sucker

>

Seed Sucker tees are hip fresh designs that are organic and eco friendly.  They have great designs in infant onesies, youth, women's slim cut, and adult sizes.  Each has a great environmental  message printed on them to support positive change for the environment. The tees are wrinkle resistant, quick drying, naturally breathable, odor resistant, and bacteria resistant.  They have 40+ UV protection.

What makes Seed Sucker so unique???

They can actually stand behind their statement...

"No more Trashing the Trash!"
Their current line is a soft blend of top quality 70% bamboo, 30% organic cotton and each shirt comes with a "PLANTABLE" hang-tag. No more trashing the trash!

Their niche is that the hang-tags are made with Lotka seed paper, which is embedded with wildflower seeds. So, whether you actually plant your tag and watch it grow or throw it away...no worries, it is biodegradable. The only way we are adding to our landfills is by adding a touch of green!

They also provide a way for consumers to participate in "giving back". On the back of each hang-tag, they provide a code which can be registered online at www.seedsucker.org. When a tag is registered, a portion of the proceeds is forwarded to the Seed Sucker Foundation which donates large, mature, trees to communities that have been devastated by natural disaster.

"Make A Change"

I received a childrens small tee for my son to try out and spread the message.  Their tees are so soft and comfortable...I am jealous that he gets to have it!  For those that do not know, my son has autism.  He loves wearing softer material tees vs. traditional cotton tees.  He loved this one!  I think he really enjoyed that bamboo softness the Seed Sucker tees provide.  The quality is great. I first washed the tee, and it washed great.  The wrinkle resistance is really nice.  When he put it on he rubbed the shirt so that it would rub on his belly.  He had this thing where he went shirtless all weekend.  Yesterday he wore the seed sucker tee with a sweatshirt(part of the day).  While at home he immediately took of the sweatshirt, but left the tee on all evening!

"Planet Earth, We have a problem"

Seed Sucker is offering my readers a 10% discount using the code: NICKI10 at checkout!  Go check them out, they are great.  shop.seedsucker.org/

As Debbie Wright, President of Seed Sucker, Inc., was in the process of taking on the dreaded task of her youngest daughter's fund~raiser event (wrapping paper), she realized that it's time someone came up with a fund raiser that is actually worthwhile, educational, offers quality products and most importantly... profitable!

Seed Sucker, Inc., Eco fund~raiser has had an overwhelming positive response from so many PTA presidents and green team board members located across several cities and states praising this company for bringing quality and education back into fund~raising.

Seed Sucker's motto is to helps spread environmental awareness one T-shirt at a time. Our Eco Fund~Raiser is one that all parties involved (from the kids to the consumers) can be proud to support. This is a story all parents can relate to when it comes to the positives and negatives of fund~raising.

 For more information about Seed Sucker Inc., "Apparel with a Conscience" Eco fund~raiser, please contact Nicki Jeter; nicki@seedsucker.org.

I am definitly passing on the fundraising information to my children's schools.  Their latest fundraising items consist of cookie dough, candy, and holidy gifts.  I have found all of these overly expensive and in my opinion cheap quality!  I would love for them to offer tees from Seed Sucker, tees that are more organic, and deliver an eco friendly message.  They are well worth the money, and deliver such a great message to our community!  I would love to support a company that is supporting the environment, the community and thier employees!

As President of Seed Sucker, Inc., Debbie's vision includes not only giving back to the environment and giving back to the community...it also includes the foundation of her corporate structure which is to provide opportunities for personal achievement and growth to those within the Seed Sucker family. By supporting and fulfilling a growing need for flexible time schedules and the ability to work from home, she has seen her company grow from a party of one to embracing 9 additional members (both in Texas and in Florida) within 10 months, and has no plans on stopping there. Debbie already has in motion to launch a new retail line called "eco freak."

"We not only support each other in business... as women and moms who take on multiple roles in our everyday chaotic lives, we can actually laugh at the day to day crazy things that happen to us as working mothers (i.e. running out the door with your kid's waffle stuck to your pant leg). Our motto at Seed Sucker is to plan your work and work your plan... that being said, love what you do and do what you love. Giving back on every level is what we are all about... success just happens to come along with the fun!"

Silly Monkey Stories: "I found an Acorn"

>
Zach is too funny...the connections he makes with items.  He got some new gloves/mittens.  They are the type that are gloves with the tip of the fingers cut out and then have the mittens that you fold up over or leave down.  The top of the mittons have a little loop(so that you can button them down).  Well every time I put the mittens up, he holds his hands up in front of his face, and says " I found an Acorn!"  It is so cute!

PreHistin...your first pre-histimine!

>
Giveaway Closed.
Congratulations Sher!

PreHistin® is the “World’s First Pre-Histamine.” Histamines are responsible for creating the chemical reactions in your body which trigger sneezing, nasal congestion, and runny nose. Most products on the market are “anti-histamine” drugs, which means they attack the histamines after they are released, but often leave you feeling drowsy for hours. PreHistin® is a

“pre-histamine” which means it regulates the release of histamine. By regulating the histamine release, your body may not overreact to foreign substances. PreHistin® was clinically shown to effectively maintain healthy IgE levels which have been linked to allergy symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and runny nose.
Patented PreHistin® contains a proprietary, patented Cobalamin formula. In controlled clinical studies by leading Allergists and Immunologists, PreHistin® has been shown to effectively regulate IgE levels in individuals while significantly increasing serum Cobalamin levels – essential for proper immune function and to maintain healthy normal response to allergens

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PreHistin® is safe and easy to use. For best results, simply dissolve one cherry flavored lozenge under your tongue and swallow, twice a day for 30 days.
PreHistin® helps build up your immune system and has been shown to keep working for weeks after you stop taking it. For best results, continue taking it throughout the season. You can begin taking PreHistin® at any time, but it takes several weeks to see optimal results since PreHistin® works by rebalancing your immune system to maintain normal response to allergens. So the sooner you start, the sooner you will see results.
PreHistin® is effective for both indoor and outdoor allergens, and safe for long-term use year round.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I received PreHistin to review.  I started taking this as directed, twice a day.  I have been taking it now for 5 days.  It says it takes several weeks to see optimal results, so I will let you know how well it works in a few weeks.  As of now, I do not mind taking it at all.  It comes as small lozenges that taste sugary, somewhat of a fruity,candy flavor.  You just let the lonzenge dissolve in your mouth(dont chew them as then they taste a bit chalky).  I have not felt any side effects.  Some allergy meds have left me tired or with a dry mouth, but not PreHistin.  At this point I have still been a little congested, but that may be a cold/flu symptoms that my children have possibly passed to me.  One plus so far, which may or may not be related, is I have not had one headache since taking PreHistin.  I had a headache every night for 3-4 nights before taking this, and get them often, but have not had one since I started taking PreHistin.  I am hoping this is a good sign!

Mommalicious Monday (winners announced)

>
So Zach went back to school last Wednesday and has been feeling better.  He does still have a bit of a cough, but it hasnt gotten worse and no more fevers!  He is preparing for Halloween already!  He has had his pumpkin out all week and when he wants a treat comes up to me and says "trick or treat".  He should have  a good time this year!  Wondering who the Wonderpets are going to have to rescue...probably their candy, when their parents steal it...haha!  They have a short week at school.  Tomorrow he will be carving pumpkins and Wednesday they have their halloween parade.  I am thinking of going, but it will depend on what time Kennedys is, as I have to take her.

Kennedy is doing better too.  She did end up getting the cough too, but it is getting better.  She hasnt had any fevers since Thursday, so I think I will take her to school today.  Her class is doing something all three days for Halloween, so we will have an odd schedule this week.  She normally goes MWF in the afternoon, but I will bring her today, tomorrow afternoon and Wed morning.  Today they are carving pumpkins, tomorrow her speech group is doing a dress up day, and Wed is their Halloween party.  So hopefully she will feel good.

My niece has the flu too, now.  Know she didnt get it from us, as we live far away!  Hoping she feels better and that my nephew or no one else gets it.  It is his birthday(and my other nephew too) on Halloween, and they are having a party Friday...it would really stink if they had everything ready and he was sick!  So get scaring those sickies away!

So besides having a busy Halloween week, I have to go clean out my freezer.  We are getting some beef and I need to have as much room as possible.  This will save some time and money grocery shopping.

We have Winners!
I already announced the winner to Uprinting and "The lovely bones".  Congratulations to BusyBee on winning the IBW book, MaryAnn_S for winning the Underwater CD, Deb for winning the Florastor, and Julie for winning the softlips!  Thank you all who have entered and keep stopping back to enter again!  A reminder to others, I had to redraw two winners, as I had no contact info for them.  Please make sure your email is in your profile! "The Lovely Bones" Review and Winners Announced

>
Congratulations to the winners of "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold!  The winners are NancyS, DebK, BelindaM, PamelaS, and Heather.  I will be emailing you all soon.  Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did!

My Review:
You are going to love it!  The Lovely Bones is a tragic, yet heartfelt story, told by murder victim Susie Salmon.  The story is a journey of her life as it is ending tragically on earth, how she sees heaven, and how life is unfolding for her family and those she has touched in some way.  I felt all the sorrow, fears, helplessness, determination, warmness and joy that comes from this story. Whether the characters are going through loneliness or togetherness, it will move you.  It is nothing like any story I have ever read.  You simply do not want to put the book down!  I read the whole 328 page book in less than 24 hours!  During those hours I cried, smiled, held my breath, and had goosebumps reading The Lovely Bones.

Storytime Sunday: Big Thoughts for Little People

>

About the book:
Ken Taylor’s best-selling book, Big Thoughts for Little People, is now updated with all-new bright and colorful illustrations and a larger trim size. Using the alphabet as a learning tool, the easy-to-use format of this beloved picture book connects Bible themes and verses that teach kids ages 3-7 Christian values. Each spread represents a letter of the alphabet and a Christian value or moral lesson beginning with the same letter. Kids are encouraged to find the lesson being modeled (or not) in the illustrations. They are also asked questions to help them apply the lesson to their lives. This book is sure to win the hearts of kids and parents alike.

About the Author:
Throughout his publishing career, Dr. Kenneth Taylor's dream was for all peoples of the world to read and understand God's Word and experience its power at work in their lives.
From his earliest children's books to his generous support of Christian ministry, this vision was (and still is) reflected in his work. Ken Taylor, founder of Tyndale House Publishers, died in June 2005 at the age of 88.
Early in his publishing career in the 1950s as director of Moody Press, Dr. Taylor wrote several children's books. Born out of experience with his own ten children, Stories for the Children's Hour, The Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes, and others are now being enjoyed by a third generation of children. My First Bible in Pictures was included in Publishers Weekly's list of "All-Time Best-Selling Children's Books" in 2001. His love for children (including his 28 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren) continues to inspire new titles.

About the Illustrator:
Award-winning children’s illustrator Andrea Petrlik Huseinović remembers the original Big Thoughts for Little People from her childhood. Now her charming artwork creates memories for children as they experience her vibrant characters and creatures. Andrea lives in Croatia.

My Review:
In  Big Thoughts for Little People, you will find a page for every letter in the alphabet.  Each letter stands for an idea that is presented by rhyming text and pictures.  These are what really highlight this book.  They draw the kids in with the rhyme, then ask them to see what is going on in the pictures.  It then discusses the pictures, and idea even more.  I really like how it gives you things to ask your children, or to think about, to further explore that specific lesson.  The illustrations are great.  They are colorful and fun, and it is great to be able to really explore them to talk about the lessons presented.  This is kind of a long book, but with lessons being seperated by each letter, you can read one page at a sitting.  The biblical themes are great for youngsters, and not too complex.  I think this would be a great book for children 2-8 years old.

disclosure~I received this book from Tyndale for free to review.

Got Monkey Butt?

>
Giveaway Closed.
Congratulations kcatlin!

ok I am sure you are giggling reading that title....but I bet someone you know has suffered from monkey butt.  "Monkey Butt" is the slang term for the soreness, itching, and redness that affects ones backside as the result of friction and sweat. Activities that induce this "monkey butt" are bicycling, running, and truck driving.

Need relief from monkey butt?  How about Anti Monkey Butt Powder.  While Anti Monkey Butt Powder is ideal for athletes and motorcyclists, its soothing treatment can aid any one who has experienced the discomfort and irritation associated with the friction of clothing on the skin.  Simply apply on the affected area prior to the activity and repeat application as needed to stay comfortable throught the day.  It may also be used inside footwear, under sports pads, and other areas prone to chafing.

Unlike other powders, Anti Monkey Butt Powder contains calamine and talc which gives it a cooling sensation instead of the burning that you might get from other products.  The only other ingrediants present is a light fragrance.

I received a bottle of Anti Monkey Butt Powder and tried it on both of my children.  I personally am waiting to use this during the summer months.  I have read that it provides relief for women for their inner thighs, and sports bra area where moisture, irritation and chaffing can occur. You may use this powder, or try the new ladies Anti Monkey butt powder.

For my daughter I used this a couple times on her buttocks, to help with redness. The redness went away after one use, each time.  I have also been using this with her for another reason.  Due to her disability she pulls her face in towards her shoulder which causes irritation on her neck area.  I have been applying Anti Monkey Butt powder to this area when it is red, or many times to prevent this.  This has worked pretty well.  It helps to cool the area, and she has smiled several times when I have applied this.  I just need to remember to clean, dry and reapply the powder and this has kept the redness away.  I also used this now twice with my son also.  Last week he was running a fever and got an odd rash on his butt.  It was pretty red and irritated looking and he kept rubbing it.  I decided to try the Anti Monkey Butt Powder.  It did not take away the redness completely, but it did look better.  My son also seemed to have relief from it too, as he didnt rub at it that day.  Now I used it again today, as obviously my son remembered its relief.  He independantly got the powder and brought it to me.  He showed me an area on his inner thigh where it was red and looked like he was rubbing.  I asked if he wanted the powder and he said yes.  I applied the powder and he smiled and didnt rub the area.  He seemed comfortable and went off to bed.

You can purchase Anti Monkey Butt Powder at many mass retail locations or online at http://www.antimonkeybutt.com/  for the suggested retail price of $5.95 for a 6 oz bottle.

One lucky reader can win one!

Child Seat Safety Resources

>
Last month I talked about Child Seat safety and gave a list of resources that were available. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would like us to again pass along these wonderful resources available for free to help them make safe choices about car seats and to help them use their car seats properly for maximum safety.

- Twitter: An actual safety expert mans the @ChildSeatSafety account on Twitter, and they will continue to answer any questions that parents have about child passenger safety. This is such a unique resource from a government agency!

- Facebook: NHTSA has a Facebook page at http://facebook.com/childpassengersafety where parents can learn about everything from LATCH to locating inspection offices.

- Website: The Ad Council and the NHTSA have created a site with all the resources parents need to keep their smallest passengers safe: http://childcarsafety.adcouncil.org/ Find your local inspection station, watch instructional videos, and even take a fun quiz!

3 Meal Magic

3 Meal Magic
The Amazing Non-diet for Emotional Eaters!

I am an emotional eater!  So I jumped on the offer to review 3 Meal Magic.  I have been overweight all my adult life, and even as a teen.  I have always been kind of quiet and keep my emotions to myself often.  After listening to the 3 Meal Magic audio I really realized this and realized I need to address my feelings, and not hide them with trying to make myself happy with eating.  I am not saying I am an unhappy person, as I am not.  Yeah there are times I am unhappy and want to keep to myself more.  Other times I am just tired.  I have noticed that I do eat more during these times.  Most of the time it isnt on purpose either.  I will say to myself not to eat, but I do it anyways.  I just dont feel satisfied with what I eat.

This past year I have actually lost 43 pounds, with exercising and cutting my calories.  I know that eating smaller meals works...but can it last?  Not for me.  The last couple months I have actually gained weight and now am only at a 38 pound loss.  Why?  Because I was binge eating.  I would follow the 6 small meals rule, and try to eat to keep my metabolism going, but this backfired on me.  I would eat, and not be satisfied and would eat more!

So today listening to 3 Meal Magic,recorded by Tricia from Heal Your Hunger  I heard how we should limit ourselves to eating just 3 meals a day.  We should care about ourselves, and show it through our eating.  Will this lead to me feeling better, better about myself, and being healthier?  I dont know, but it is worth the try.  Obviously the smaller meals concept isnt for me, as I just want more.  Now can I get my mind set to stick with just the 3 meals.  The 3 Meal Magic CD doesnt give you any specific diet to follow.  It seemed like a therapy session.  With a nice calm voice Tricia talks about emotional eating, trying to care for yourself and the benefits of just eating 3 meals a day.  Why buy it?  Like I said, it feels like therapy.  She isnt nagging you about dieting, she isnt forcing you to exercise, she is just talking to you.  She wants you to open up to her and discuss your issues with her, email her or send a tweet.  I know I need support, I know I need something else, otherwise I am going to yo yo again..So I am giving it a try!  So watch my fitness friday posts to find out if this works for me.  I will post and let my readers know if I feel like I am changing in any ways following the 3 Meals a day concept.  In response to this I should feel better about myself and should understand if I am actually hungry or am being emotional.  I should be able to eventually be satisfied with my meals and eat til Im no longer hungry and not stuff myself.  All this is worth the try!

Want some freebies from Tricia... http://healyourhunger.com/freebies/

disclosure~ I received the 3 Meal Magic audio for free to review...I have listened a told you how I feel now, to see if it helps my readers will have to read my fitness friday posts to see how I incorporate the concept and we will see together if I have any results after listening to this.  So far the results are that it has motivated me to try something new. I have not been compensated in any other way for writing this post.

Subscribe and each Thursday, you will receive an email with a quick link back to the site.  This weeks feature email was titled "Eat your Vegetables" and gave great tips on getting your kids to eat their veggies.

Log on to Relish! and get ready to treat yourself to weekly dinner menus that are customized to your own tastes. Choose the Express Menu and download our picks for the week or choose what you would prefer from our Custom Menu. I have had the opportunity to try Relish! since January, as I won a subscription.  They have great recipes and everything is extremely well organized!  They make dinner planning a breeze, or if you are just looking for a new recipe log in and check out their many different recipes.  You can go into their past menu section and it will give you a list of recipes which you can then refine by category or search by a specific ingrediant, or search through their long list.  You can then either see the recipe or add it to your favorites to use in your weekly menu.  I love that everything is labelled with their recipe legend like KF-Kid Friendly, Q-Quick, and C-Crockpot.

Besides the weekly menu section and past menus, there are several other sections to check out like Tailgate Party, Healthy Lunches, Seasonal, My Recipes, Freezer, and This and That.  Right now the seasonal section is labelled Halloween, which you can click on and take you to the Halloween page with recipes like mummy cookies and terrifying taco soup.

 I love the Freezer section.  You can choose 5 out of 10 suggestions.  The printable list has the shopping list and recipes.  You can fix the food to the recipe and it gives you freezer instructions.  It also has cooking labels to affix to the prepared dish to give you directions on how to cook it.  The last thing it has is a freezer list that lists the items in the freezer with the cooking method, estimated cooking time and side suggestions.  This is a great section for busy moms and to keep those cramped freezers organized!

The other section I really like is the This and That.  This gives you all kinds of recipes from different categories, that you can download and print.  Some of the categories are appetizers, dinner and a movie, Christmas, Easter, and Themed parties, as well as many more.  This is another great way to find recipes using a specific category.

Having the weekly emails has been nice, if you are busy and forget about your subscription, or link to Relish...no frets as the weekly emails are a great reminder and have a simple link to log in.

Fitness Friday: National PT Month

>
This month is National Physical Therapy Month.  I would like to take the time to say a big Thank you to all the PTs that have worked with Kennedy!  We have had a great group of therapists working with us over the years!  They have helped Kennedy learn to sit up, crawl, walk with a walker, hold her head up and stay stretched and strong!

Another aspect of physical therapy month is to remind everyone if you are taking pain meds daily...go to the doctors and get checked out.  Going to physical therapy instead of taking meds can help you stretch and tone and doesnt have the side effects on your body like the medicine!

International Infection Prevention week

>

Germs! Not on my Watch!

When someone develops an infection at a hospital or other patient care facility that they did not have prior to treatment, this is referred to as a healthcare-associated (sometimes hospital-acquired) infection (HAI).

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a global crisis affecting both patients and healthcare workers.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at any point in time, 1.4 million people worldwide suffer from infections acquired in hospitals.
How concerned are you?  I know having a child that has been hospitalized several times this is always a concern.  If you are like me you watch to make sure the nurses and doctors wash their hands, wear gloves, etc.

Unfortunately even with the best of intentions, healthcare workers do not always wash and disinfect their hands as often as they should. This less than perfect hand hygiene performance can pose a serious risk to patients because as stated by Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), “Clean hands are the single most important factor in preventing the spread of dangerous germs and antibiotic resistance in healthcare settings.”1

While the use of gloves does not eliminate the need for hand hygiene, likewise, the use of hand hygiene does not eliminate the need for gloves. Gloves reduce hand contamination by 70 percent to 80 percent, prevent cross–contamination and protect patients and healthcare personnel from infection.

The importance of gloves, masks, and other personal protective apparel cannot be overestimated in preventing infection in healthcare settings. They, along with hand hygiene, are the first line of defense in preventing the spread of infection from person to person within healthcare settings.

It is good to know that companies like Kimberly-Clark are helping in infection control.

As part of an ongoing commitment to quality care and infection prevention, nationwide doctors and hospitals are partnering with Kimberly-Clark to deliver continuing education programs on healthcare-associated infection (HAI) prevention to staff and management. As simple as education sounds, busy doctors and nurses on the front lines of delivering care can find it difficult to find the time to take advantage of scheduled programs within their hospitals.

The HAI Education Program is part of a national infection awareness campaign for healthcare professionals called “Not on My Watch” and will provide the facility with a toolkit that contains informational flyers, patient safety tips and posters.

The "Not on My Watch" campaign provides accredited continuing education (CE) programs based on best practices and guidelines as well as research available on reducing the incidence of healthcare-associated infections.

For details about the "Not On My Watch" campaign, and the HAI Education Bus please visit www.HAIwatch.com.

Is your anti-perspirant protecting you?

>
Givevaway Closed.
Congratulations Miranda!

Certain Dri Anti-Perspirant has been the leading, dermatologist-recommended product for controlling excessive underarm perspiration for more than three decades.  While other products claim to be "clinical strength" the Certain Dri formulations-12% aluminum chloride in the roll on and 25% aluminum sesquichlorohydrate in the new solid- are the strongest available over-the-counter formulas at stores nationwide for the control of excessive underarm sweating, providing up to 72 hours of protection with each application.

According to an independant survey, a majority of dermatologists perfer the formula in Certain Dri anti-perspirant for treating excessive perspiration over the formula in all other anti-perspirants combined.

I was given the new Certain Dri Solid anti-perspirant to try out.  It works GREAT!  I have been using this most days for about two weeks now.  I have used it on days when I am out and have my winter coat on, and days when I have been exercising.  I have not once had wet underarms while using this!  While exercising have have felt sweaty, and have had the back of my shirt wet, but my underarms were dry!  I typically use a certain brand of soft solid deoderant and anti-perspirant combo, because since having my children I have always felt I have excessive perspiration.  I have used my "regular" brand for a couple years as many others have failed and didnt protect me.  Certain Dri works much better than my regular brand! What is great is it can be used by men or women. The only issue I had with Certain Dri was that it says it goes on clear, while it did leave a white mark on my tank top.

 I would also prefer to have a little bit of a deoderant scent, but this would be great for those that do not want a perfumey or powder scent.  If you do want a scent you can get the Certain Dri AM Scented Underarm Refresher, with a "morning fresh" scent.  This is available in stick or roll on and has been specially formulated for use in the morning to give all day odor control when applied to the underarms each morning after showering.

On 7/14, Certain Dri was on the national TV show, Good Morning America in a segment on Sweat.
http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=8077794

Certain Dri's retail price is $5.50-$6, almost 40% less than the other clinical strength antiperspirant products.

Would you like to try it? One reader can win one Certain Dri Solid.

Can using the Tasty Baker help my autistic son?

>
Pop Art Toaster was looking for families with an autistic child to try out their products and see if we find any improvements in their daily living.  We decided to try their 5-in-1 Tasty Baker.  The Tasty Baker can bake items like waffles, pancakes, muffins, breads and cakes.  These bake in fun kid friendly shapes and in much less time than traditional cooking.  I have used this with Zach, my five year old son who has autism.  Zach has had many sensory issues regarding food and we are trying to find ways on working through these.  This is the journal we kept while using the Tasty Baker.

trial 1: waffles:
 I made waffles(while he was in school) for an after school treat , layered with frosting. Zach was excited. He ate one, but then licked the frosting off and left the rest. We reheated waffles for breakfast but again he mostly licked the syrup off. Zach's typical behavior with things with frosting is to eat mostly just the frosting. I have never gotten him to eat waffles in the past.

trial 2: apple cinnamon muffins:
 Zach helped make this, by stirring the batter, which he enjoyed. He ate these well. He loved pretending to have the train go choo choo into his mouth. He independantly asked for these on a couple occassions. I sent these to school and he must have ate them as they did not come home. He ate all of these. He would pair them up when he would choose them to eat...would pick only dogs one day, hearts the next.  We had great results with these muffins.  He really seemed to enjoy them while typically he does not eat regular sized muffins.

trial 3: chocolate/choc chip muffins:
I made while he was in school. Zach would not eat any of these. I tried offering at different times, but he would not even try them. Sent them to school with lunch and they would come back home. I tried going choo choo with train but he still said no (thinking maybe the dark color was not motivating for him?). I brought these to the neighbors with other kids, as sometimes Zach will try things if other kids eat them. He did take a few off the plate independantly, but just licked them.

trial 4: pancakes:
 Zach watched me make these. Zach took a couple bites, but mostly just licked the syrup off. This is pretty typical when he eats pancakes.

trial 5: blueberry muffins:
I made these while he was in school. Zach just says no to them. I thought he would try these seeing he liked the apple cinnamon ones so much, not sure why he will not even try them. As far as fruits go he does enjoy apples the most, and only tastes others typically...but he will not even try these muffins.  These really stumped me why he would not try these at all.  All I can think is he didnt like the flavor of the chocolate muffins, so he thought he wouldnt like these.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So far this is what we have made.  I am thinking of trying more layered items.  While I tried this with the waffles and frosting, I think that it might work better with a different item and making them thinner in size this time.  They have some cute recipes on Pop Art toaster site, I saw a cute fun house type item that looks like fun.  Maybe we can get more creative.  I think the fun shapes are definitly a motivator for Zach.  I do know that while many parents discourage playing with food, it is actually something that is good for kids.  Both of my children have done this with their occupational therapists and it is encouraged to to help the kids enjoy their foods. I have had Zach pull the Tasty Baker closer and tap on it like he wants us to make stuff.  I think I will do more of items he can help mix up(The tasty baker gets pretty warm so I dont let him help actually bake the items).  I think it is a fun activity for kids and maybe it can motivate other children with feeding issues.  I would like to add that although I didnt use this with my daughter(as she no longer eats by mouth due to her disability) I think that she would have loved these.  They are perfect sized for little ones so they dont over stuff their mouth and can pick them up easily!  They would make great dunkables!
disclosure~We received the Tasty baker free in exchange for keeping a journal on our progress with it and posting a review.
Teaching our kids about their bodies
>
I was reading  a great article from Family Education about teaching your young child about their body parts.  Many children see their parents completely or partially naked at one time or another.  How do you feel when they start asking questions or looking more curious?  They suggest that when your child starts asking questions reassure your child that their genitalia are the right size and shape now and will change as they grow up.
I will admit, this is an area that has always left me a bit uncomfortable.  So of course when I received the following books I felt a bit uncomfortable.
Dr. Jim Burns, family expert and award-winning author, offers a valuable resource for those uncomfortable--even dreaded--conversations.
God Made Your Body (for ages 3-5 years old.)
With biblical, age-appropriate information and illustrations, God Made Your Body introduces children ages 3 to 5 to the basic idea that God created our bodies. Addressing topics such as how boys and girls are different, it also emphasizes how each child is unique and special to God.
How God Makes Babies (for ages 6-9 yrs.)
With biblical, age-appropriate information and illustrations, How God Makes Babies introduces children ages 6 to 9 to the basics of human sexuality. Answering the question of where babies come from, it also emphasizes how children are a part of God's wonderful plan for families.
So I read the first book to my children,"God Made Your Body", and felt fine with it.  It talked about the many differences like hair and eye color.  It did give some information on the differences of boys and girls genetalia and that "a mommy and daddy come together in a special way called making love".  They spoke briefly about the sperm and egg and this is how babies are made.  I think this was written well, and while I felt a little uncomfortable it was brief and to the point.  They then talked about how babies grow in the mommys tummy and are born, then about family.  I think this book is a great starting point on talking to your kids about their body.
The second book, "How God Makes Babies", I didnt read to my children.  With it being for a little older, I didnt think this was quite appropriate yet.  I do think it will be good to read once they are more informed on their bodies.  I did read the whole book to myself.  It is a lot like the first, with a bit more detail.  I think this is a great book for tactfully teaching your kids about their genetalia and how babies are made.  It is talks about a man and woman getting married, and that husbands and wives may want to start a family and have a babies.  It is more in depth than the first book about describing the male and female body parts.  It touched on a bit of keeping your private parts private.  It discusses how babies are created from fertilization through child birth.  It also nicely touches on becoming a family and how some babies are adopted.  I can definitly see reading this as my kids are older and need to know more.  Seeing I am somewhat uncomfortable with this topic it will probably be at the older of the age range for this book(6-9yrs).
After reading these books I thought it would be good to teach my kids more about their whole body.  As little ones I have taught this is your head, hands, nose, etc.  Now how about teaching whats inside.  I have had so many curious preschoolers and elementary school aged kids ask about Kennedys tube feeding ."What is that?" they ask a lot.  I have tried on many occassions to explain that it is how she eats.  Sometimes trying to explain to a child that it goes directly to their belly has been kind of comical.  I remember talking to my nephew when he was probably 4-5 years old.  I told him when he eats it goes in his mouth, down his throat in into his belly..and kind of pointed along my body when I told him this.  I told him for Kennedy the feeding bag was like the mouth, the tube was like her throat and then it is connected right to her belly.  Wow did he laugh, he thought that was pretty silly and really didnt understand it.
 So it makes me wonder does my now 5 year old understand what it is?  Why not try to find some more ways on teaching him about his body.
Zach loves puzzles. I found these great looking puzzles by One Step Ahead(Leaps and Bounds).  The award-winning Body Puzzles teach kids what's inside them, starting with a skeleton (bottom layer) and working up to organs, muscle, skin, and clothing. They have boy and girl puzzles.  I think this would be a great way to teach him about his bones, muscles and organs.
I have recently been reviewing another book called "Mommy, Draw Stars on My Tummy" by Martine Groeneveld.  In this she has a great activity/game called "The Bone Search".  This sounds like a great way in teaching your kids about their bones and muscles by "drawing" on their body.  You can learn more about this and fun ways to bond with your young children through nurturing touch by going to http://www.mommydrawstarsonmytummy.com/.  You can pre order the book, which I think would make a wonderful Christmas gift or gift for a new baby!
I found this great song called "My Body: Internal Organs" by Ron Brown from his CD, "The Human Body".
The whole CD is about your body and has many different songs to teach children about their body.  You can view the lyrics of  "My Body Internal Organs" at Songs for Teaching, Using music to promote learning
THE HUMAN BODY - Learning about body systems and functions is fun and easy with Intelli-Tunes!
Songs Include - My Body (Internal Organs) • Blood • The Heart Song • Bones! Bones! Bones! • Name Those Bones • Digestion • Five Senses • My Eyes Aren't What They Used to Be • Tooth Rap • Wiggly, Wobbly • I'm Keepin' Clean • Junk Food
How about a great free printable  body organs riddles and puzzles.
It has a beat,
That warms your feet
An important part,
Is your ____________.
This looks like a fun idea for your elementary aged kiddos.  To get the rest of the riddle and more ideas go to  A to Z Teacher Stuff, Human body printables
Mommalicious Monday night
>
*Big sigh*  Both of my kids are sick!  Zach started with a cough last Wednesday, while Kennedy was having vomitting episodes.  Kennedy I figured was just her cyclic vomitting syndrome.  She actually didnt throw up at all Thur-Sat.  Zach has been out of school since Thursday.  His cough was really bad and he has been sleeping differently.  Which is making me very tired as he is getting up really early because he naps or is coughing so much.  He started running a fever Friday night and over the weekend.  Then Kennedy started with a fever too.  Hers was higher.  She has no cough though so that is good.  She has started throwing up more since last night and has been acting sick, waking up moaning.  I took both kids to the doctors.  Zach seems better today and am hoping he is on the end stretch of his illness.  Could possibly be H1N1 but we didnt test for it.  I just gotta watch for the cough and fever to come back or get worse.  For Kennedy we are hoping it is just a stomach bug.  Hopefully she doesnt get the cough Zach has!  The H1N1 vaccine became available at the hospital today, so we went ahead and gave it to her today.  Hopefully if it is going around, she will build up immunity to it early enough to not get it.
So I must keep my mouth shut about no doctor appointments!  This week I have Zachs parent teacher conference tomorrow night and kennedys IEP Thursday afternoon.  Bob was thinking of possibly taking Zach to Chicago(I think) this coming weekend for a hobby expo type thingy.  I am sure he would love it with lots of trains and all those good things Zach loves....but he probably wont want to leave and will want to touch everything.  So not sure if they are going or not.  I will have to make some more Wonderpets capes soon.  Halloween coming up and Zach, Andrea and Lexi are going to be the Wonderpets this year and have their little red wagon as their spaceboat.  They should be so cute!  I still am not sure what I am dressing Kennedy as and the weather will depend on whether or not she goes trick or treating.  That reminds me I gotta stop in the grocery store this week to see when they are doing their festivities...it was really nice last year and the kids enjoyed it.  NO mall this year...that was totally crazy last year.  The weather was crappy last halloween so I think most kids went trick or treating when the mall did it.  This is the first year I have been here that trick or treating is actually on halloween.  I do like how they do it during the day and have set hours.  It makes for a safer and more organized trick or treating!
I picked winners for two giveaways today.  Winner of Mosaic was Kathy55439!  Winners of Light up Your Childs Mind were MaryAnnS, Kathy Pease, Shawn, Michelle, and lilyk!  Congrats to all winners I have sent you all emails.  If you didnt win...keep entering my other giveaways.  I will be posting a couple new ones this week too!  Good luck!
Blog tour of Holy Bible : Mosaic
>
The heavens proclaim, the glory of God.
The skies display his craftsmanship.
~Psalm 19:1
Keith Williams General Editor speaking about the artwork and creativity that went into Holy Bible: Mosaic :
One of my favorite parts of working on this project was selecting the artwork to go with each week. There were several people involved in finding possible pieces, sorting through which ones were particularly good, finding the right week to place them with, and coming up with the final placement to bring the week together.
There were a couple of issues that made this process both difficult and exciting. First, there is really an embarrassment of riches when it comes to excellent Christian artwork—especially when the scope of your search extends throughout the world and over 20 centuries! We found many, many more pieces of meaningful art than we could possibly use; God has certainly blessed his church with an astonishing number of talented artists who use their skills to bring glory to him.
The second issue was making sure that the art we wanted to use was both available and affordable. This proved to be much more difficult! There were some pieces that we found that would have been a perfect complement to a given week, but the image owner charged an arm and a leg to use it in print. A good example of where this happens is with famous artwork owned by museums. We were able to include some of these kind of pieces (e.g., the Rembrandt on p. m182), but including many more of these would have been way too expensive and resulted in a higher price tag for the Bible—something we wanted to avoid. But in some cases, we found some amazing artwork but were unable to include it for other reasons. Sometimes we were unable to find the copyright owner for an image, and other times we just couldn’t get our hands on an image file that was of high enough quality to be used in publication.
In spite of these issues, I am very pleased with the art that we were able to include, though it took some creative searching to find some of it. One great story from our search centers around the art featured on p. m314 in the Bible. Several of us were working very hard to find great artwork to use, and my boss found an old Bible in his office that is owned by Tyndale. This is a beautiful old Bible published in 1870 that included way more than the text of Scripture. It is filled with beautiful, full-page black and white woodcuts throughout, and the first half of the book consists of a full, illustrated Bible dictionary and a number of other Bible helps. But the art we used on p. m314 is found separating the Old Testament from the New Testament, and it is one of the few full-color pages in the Bible. The gold on the original page is gilded, so it shines. We thought it was a great fit for the week on Righteous Judgment because of the juxtaposition of the Ten Commandments with Jesus’ answer to the teacher of religious law about the Greatest Commandment, both of which simultaneously challenge us to change the way we live and drive us to thanking God for his mercy and grace.
My hope is that all of the artwork that was chosen for this Bible will be useful in the lives of the people who use it in their devotional life.
My Review:
It was stated in the users guide that this Bible's purpose is to provide a way to encounter Christ on every continent and in every century of Christian history.  To show that we are part of a mosaic, a patchwork of people, places, times and cultures, that depicts one person: Jesus Christ.  I feel this Bible met its purpose.  The contributors did a great job organizing this Bible and presenting the larger community of Christians.
 This Bible is divided into two section.  The first half of the book contains weekly meditations.  They are designed to be used in connection with the church year.  These weekly meditation contain quotations, poems or other writings,by people all over the world, that correspond to the scriptures that are presented.  I think for someone like myself that can not physically attend mass every week, this is a good way to stay connected with Christ and to follow readings that correspond with the church seasons.  This section offers suggested readings, prayers and a place to write down your own reflections, as well as beautiful artwork.
The second half of the book is the New Living Translation of the Old and New Testaments.  It is nice having this in the same book as  the meditation section, although it is also nice having it seperated so that if you are more comfortable reading a different version of the Bible you can still follow along with the weekly meditations.  I found the New Living Translation easy to read.
I liked that along with this Bible, you can also go to the Holy Bible: Mosaic web site.  You may need this to help you know exactly where we are in the church calendar and what week to follow in the meditations(although you may read what ever chapter you would like).  Although I have not used the next feature, there is also a discussion forum on their site.  If you would like to have a discussion with others about the weekly meditations, or scriptures you may go to the forum and start a topic or chat with someone that has already started a topic.  You may also follow Keith Williams on  facebook http://www.facebook.com/KeithWilliams, and Mosaic has a fan page at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/Holy-Bible-Mosaic/113006212792. My Review:
This is a cute story about getting homesick and having some new friends.  This would be a cute story having the stuffed animals to accompany it while it is read, seeing it is about stuffed animals.  I actually expected the book to be more about the journey getting home, but it was more about being welcomed back home.
