An unborn baby with a fatal heart defect . . . a skier submerged for an hour in a frozen Norwegian lake . . . a comatose brain surgery patient whom doctors have declared a "vegetable."Today I was watching CNN and saw part of the upcoming companion documentary "Another Day: Cheating Death" which will debut on CNN on Saturday 10/17 and Sunday 10/18 at 8pm, 11pm and 2am. He was telling the story of a 22 year old young man that is alive today after being dead for five minutes! He was also discussing how with techiniques of chest compressions many people survive today where years ago they would be pronounced dead. It was really interesting and I am looking forward to reading his book and watching the documentary.
Twenty years ago all of them would have been given up for dead, with no realistic hope for survival. But today, thanks to incredible new medical advances, each of these individuals is alive and well . . .Cheating Death.
In this riveting book, Dr. Sanjay Gupta-neurosurgeon, chief medical correspondent for CNN, and bestselling author-chronicles the almost unbelievable science that has made these seemingly miraculous recoveries possible. A bold new breed of doctors has achieved amazing rescues by refusing to accept that any life is irretrievably lost. Extended cardiac arrest, "brain death," not breathing for over an hour-all these conditions used to be considered inevitably fatal, but they no longer are. Today, revolutionary advances are blurring the traditional line between life and death in fascinating ways.
Drawing on real-life stories and using his unprecedented access to the latest medical research, Dr. Gupta dramatically presents exciting accounts of how pioneering physicians and researchers are altering our understanding of how the human body functions when it comes to survival-and why more and more patients who once would have died are now alive. From experiments with therapeutic hypothermia to save comatose stroke or heart attack victims to lifesaving operations in utero to the study of animal hibernation to help wounded soldiers on far-off battlefields, these remarkable case histories transform and enrich all our assumptions about the true nature of death and life.

Exercise everyday will do wonders for your health. Your heart is the most important muscle in your body.
ReplyDeleteI would love this book. I come from a medical family, and am always looking for new health topics and solutions. The nurses in my family would envy me this!
ReplyDeleteIt's always diet and exercise as the keys to good health. I like the fact that CPR is as effective with just chest compressions and may be more effective than breathing too, more people would be less hesitant to help if need be.
ReplyDeletesounds like a good book

I loved when Gupta went on Colbert to promote this book, and Colbert accused him of plagiarism (he has a segment called 'Cheating Death with Dr. Stephen T Colbert, DFA). It was great.

I had Sudden Cardiac Death last year. Now I'm back to work, and I'd love to see how others arrived in similar situations.
ReplyDeleteMedicine cheats death everyday. Advances are being made every day. I remember when Jim Brady was shot in the assination attempt on President Reagan, his surgery required the removal of part of his brain. I remember the doctor on tv saying this surgery wasn't possible five years ago. garrettsambo@aol.com
